Megadeth is an American thrash metal band from Los Angeles, California. The group was formed in 1983 by guitarist Dave Mustaine and bassist David Ellefson, following Mustaine's dismissal from Metallica. A pioneer of the American thrash metal scene, Megadeth rose to international fame in the 1980s and was ranked as one of the "Big Four" of thrash metal bands, along with Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax. Their commercial success was marked by the release of platinum-selling albums Countdown to Extinction (1992) and Youthanasia (1994), both of which reached two on the Billboard 200. Megadeth disbanded in 2002 after Mustaine suffered a nerve injury that prevented him from playing guitar. The band reformed in 2004 and released The System Has Failed (2004), before going on hiatus again in 2006. Megadeth returned in 2010 with founder Dave Mustaine as the sole original member, and released their tenth studio album TH1RT3EN (2011). Dave Ellefson is the only other original member present in the band.
The band has released fifteen studio albums, two live albums, five compilations, one EP, thirty-six singles, thirty-nine music videos, and three video albums. Megadeth is known for its distinctive and often complex song structures, as well as its eclectic mix of musical influences. The band's debut album Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good! (1985) was met with mixed reviews, but subsequent releases Peace Sells... but Who's Buying? (1986), So Far, So Good... So What! (1988), and Rust in Peace (1990) were met with increasing critical acclaim. Megadeth is ranked as one of the greatest metal bands of all time by publications such as MTV, Hit Parader, Kerrang!, and Metal Hammer. In 2009, they were ranked No. 16 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. In 2013, they were ranked No. 11 on VH1's list of the "100 Greatest Heavy Metal Bands of All Time".
The group has sold more than 38 million records worldwide, earning platinum certification for six of its fifteen studio albums.
