Like any starrett tool it is a quality tool. Was shipped in an envelope with the normal starrett box. I think that the price is fair for what it is. From time to time you will need to check and adjust the center head. You can check how accurate the center head is by getting a machined disc and putting the center head on the disc like you normally would. Then you make a mark where the ruler is and then rotate the center head 180 degrees. If both lines match, the center head is accurate, if not it will need to be adjusted. You can adjust the center head by sanding one side a little and rechecking on the disk, until both sides of the center head line up with each other.

I watched several videos on how to make jigs to find the center point of a dowel or square. While I came close, I never really succeeded at finding the true center. For the price, there was nothing to lose! This product is solid and true - finding center points is no longer a problem. It was well worth the money!!!

Products works as describes

Fit perfectly on my 35+ year old 12" Craftsman combination square ruler (#39555). Said ruler is 1" wide, with a longitudinal groove on one side. As far as the quality of the center head itself - one word: Starrett!

Received center head promptly and found it was exactly as described. Slid right on to my forty-year-old Starrett 12" steel rule to join the combination square that lives there. Works as you'd expect a Starrett measuring tool to work. What surprised me was (a) how comfortable they look together on that rule and, (b) the new center head came in exactly the same sort of box that the old combination square came in. And it was made in Massachusetts. And the quality control guy actually signed the slip of paper in the box.

Recently started leaning more towards hand tools for smaller and more refined woodworking. Been looking at various higher-end tools believing that it will improve my accuracy and purchased my first Starrett product...and was throughly disappointed. I have to agree with other reviewers stating that Starrett products are not what they used to be. Quality control dept should have rejected this one. It is off-center, lopsided, the edges are painfully sharp. Because the tool was made lopsided, there is a piece of metal where the two arms meet that was not machined off cleanly so it prevents square stock from sitting snug. Rather than simply return this piece, will give them another chance to see if this was an anomaly. Will be writing a follow up after I get a replacement.Follow up: 2nd one I received was not as bad as the first one I got but still poor workmanship. Was hoping for precision American engineering but, again, disappointed. Ultimately returned items for refunds.
