We know Jean-Paul Belmondo is a good actor, but lurking under that insouciant charm of his is an even better actor, if he is given the right script which this was. He plays a French secret agent, sent to kill an African dictator, but the plans of the French Government change and Belmondo is informed on and imprisoned. He eventually escapes and returns to Paris to seek revenge and complete his task, which puts him at the top of the Government's hit list.If this sounds reminiscent of The Bourne Identity, it is and I'm sure this film of 1981, inspired the 2003 one. There's even an unusual car chase.In fact it's fascinating just how many of the plots of older French thrillers have found favour with Hollywood scriptwriters!But this a true realistic French thriller - no soft centre and no happy ending. Of course it has a nasty villain played by Robert Hossein and no self-respecting French thriller would be complete without at least two scantily clad (and unclad) beautiful women and this one meets that criteria.

Super film. Well made, well acted and has a memorable score. Brilliant.

Amusing classic film, quite silly.

Very disappointing, there are no subtitles on this disc. Sure there is an English dub on this film, but having Africans speaking in posh English accents is off putting. And what if the viewer is hard of hearing? Expect more from a DVD at this price.

Leathery faced french action! Also, the theme throughout is a refreshing glass off ear juice every time. The spaghetti western/Romero blood in it is a bit odd but looking past that it's a treat. It unlike many films has the element of surprise!!!
