Woodwind Instruments and Their History (Dover Books On Music: Instruments)
L**?
Worth EVERY penny.
This book coupled with the Adam Carse book constitutes one of the best resources on musical instruments I've ever had. When researching the history of the clarinet, be sure to note the differences between Baines' and Carse's books and keep in mind when each one was written because things have changed. I find this resource quite valuable even though I no longer take history courses and am more of an amature.

extensive, fascinating historical study of a wide range of woodwinds
A classic book. No better study has ever been written. Includes details about different designs of common instruments, like oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and descriptions of a lot of old woodwinds one has never heard of

Good
Good book, just a little disappointed because the information isn't current. I didn't look at the publication date at all! It still gives good history on the woodwind family that is useful.

Excellent book
I love wind instruments, even if they do tend to protest when I play them. This book provides a fascinating history of woodwind instruments, and it had helped me to understand how the different variations of instruments came about. You don't need the book to play instruments, but I like to know more about their context and history. For that, this book is well worth buying.

Fine exposition of European Instrument Makers
Not very well illustrated and London makers are hard done by but nevertheless a worthwhile read for anyone interested in the subject
