These little sponges work great...

The media could not be loaded.  I use this in my Penn-Plax Cascade 600 Submersible Aquarium filter along with a single sheet of polyester bedding, and biomax. In that order. I also chose to hot-rod my filters to suit my own needs it just works better for me that way and my Submersible Aquarium filter came with this original sponging and I really liked it so I kept investing in these instead of the charcoal cartridge. There’s nothing wrong with the Penn Plax charcoal cartridges i just chose not to use them because my water is perfectly fine it comes from our local water well. I have another filter at the end. And with this set up and filtration I do not have to worry about a foul smell or cloudy water. It stays perfectly clean and I have a 3 year old Red Eared Slider that’s 5 1/2 inches and 3 Blood Parrot Cichlids two that’s 2 inches and one of my parrot fish that’s 4 inches. & I have no issues. I wash the gunk out of the sponge in tank water every month only during my big water change. As I keep up with weekly and monthly water changes I do not need to clean my sponge often plus it doesn’t get clogged with anything. I don’t keep small fry or fish, shrimp, or any lil critters in this tank. It can also be because I only feed my fish in the tank Jade my red eared slider has all her feeding times in a 20 long sterilite tub. Except for her occasional shrimp treat she eats from my hand. I bought this for my 5-gallon beta tank, to replace a built-in filter that wasn't doing the job. It's quiet, sturdy and effective.I'm not giving it five stars because I prefer not having to buy pre-made filters, but if you're ok with that I highly recommend it.Bonus: I let the water get too low, and the unit was running about half in the water for a full day. No problem, I filled the tank and it works just as well as it did before!

Make sure you do NOT have any fish that are smaller than 1-2” in the tank you use this in. It sucked 2 of my fish up in it and killed them. I used a piece of a broken air stone to plug the hole and it has been fine since.Now that I got that out of the way....It’s powerful, quiet and you can adjust the strength as well as the direction of the outflow. Or you can attach the spray bar to it.

Wow, didn't realize how bad my sponge filter was until I unpacked the new one! Exactly what it should be - right shape and size. When I first got my turtle, employees told me that I only needed to rinse the filter and wouldn't need to replace. Holy cow, what a difference this is going to make! I am going to order my next one soon to have it on hand.
