Steens Richmond 2 Door Wardrobe, Pine

I bought this wardrobe on the strength of a chest of draws I purchased in the same range. It was very poorly packaged and Yodel had taped up the box to reinforce it as it had split open enroute, for once Yodel doing something right! Seemed odd though as the chest of drawers I recieved previously arrived with the original box inside an Amazon box which seems a much more secure way to ship heavy items like this.Luckily all the parts were present but the instructions had gone AWOL, presumably due to the split box. Amazon weren't much help, they said I would need to return the whole parcel to get a new one sent out with instructions which seemed crazy. Luckily I found they manufacturer's site and a quick phone call to them meant the instructions were emailed promptly. I didn't have much of a problem putting it together on my own as much of the assembly works in the same way as the chest of drawers so I was already familiar with a fair amount of what was needed. Oddly though it come with four extra strips of wood and 15 screws that aren't mentioned in the instructions at all. I wonder if this is due to the flimsiness of the single back support and 4 backing pieces. Maybe Steens have added some extras to make it all a bit more sturdy. I will be trying them today to see if there's anywhere obvious for these parts to go. I don't think a small child could collapse the unit as a previous review suggested but it certainly could do with a bit more bracing at the back.On the whole it looks quite nice and was cheap and the company were responsive when I phoned about the instructions. They can be reached here if you end up in the same boat as me and don't fancy a Mensa challenge putting it together![...]If the extra bits help make it more solid I'll update the review. Very surprised that Amazon shipped it the way they did though. Very poor on their part.

This is the first time I have bought flat pack furniture over the net. After the usual research we chose this as representing good value for its size and looks. It has been assembled and looks like its picture; it also has a floating inside shelf which can be located at a choice of various heights.Why not more stars. At times the instructions could be a little confusing and it therefore took ten hours to do, but I am very fussy. The main beef was that we were never contacted by the courier company as promised. Amazon advised that this would all be arranged in advance, we had neither an e-mail or a phone call from the delivery people. Result was that this very heavy item was left with fortunately a helpful neighbour who was in. If I had been contacted I could easily have been in on the day in question. Not good!

The item arrived protected by a single cardboard box and a couple of bits of polystyrene; and so it was inevitable that one or two of the panels would be damaged. Fortunately, as the wardrobe stands in a corner, the damage is not obvious. It took me two hours or so to assemble. I departed from the instructions by placing the rail at the top of the wardrobe and the shelf at the bottom, creating an area for my little-used footwear. Good quality furniture is denoted by dovetail joints in the drawers and tongue and groove back panels. This wardrobe does not have drawers of course but neither does it have tongue and groove back panels - it comprises two pieces of plywood. For the price, though, I suppose one mustn't complain.

This flat-pack arrived in the morning and was assembled and looking good in one of our spare bedrooms in the afternoon. Although the manufacturer reckons it can be assembled in an hour, it took me two, but without any difficulty as the visual instructions are very clear.My only criticism is that the packaging is not very sturdy with the wood simply packed with a couple of strips of polystyrene inside a cardboard box. As a result, there were a couple of small marks on the wood where the packaging had received blows, but luckily enough these were not bad enough to consider returning the item, and they were not visible on the exterior when assembled. Had it not been for this factor, undoubtedly I would have awarded 5 stars.The assembled wardrobe looks smart and considering the price for real pine, exceptional value, better than anything we found elsewhere.

Very time consuming to assemble, states 2 hours but took me and my partner about 3 and a half hours to complete! Instructions are pictures only and the pieces of wood are not labelled so you really have to look closely to match them (mainly the sides of the wardrobe) as we started assembly only to have to undo it as the sides were the wrong way around. The wood is not what i expected, the back is thin cardboard. Having said that, this was bought for babies room and looks very nice and expensive once assembled. Doesnt have much room if you have alot of adult clothes though.

Unfortunately the item arrived damaged and had to be returned.The whole wardrobe arrived in one package which was extreemly heavy. The packaging was poor and it looked as though a fork lift truck had damaged the wood when moving it. It was very difficult indeed to re pack on my own for return because it was so heavy. I am currently awaiting a refund as there were no replacements in stock and in any case I would not have requested another one because of the packaging. However, the the quality of the wood and finish on the pieces I unpacked looked good so I was rather disapointed with the outcome.

This is not an heirloom piece, you buy it because you need something quick and cheap. It's deep enough to hang clothes properly which cannot be said of some other budget options. The wood version is much better than the MDF/cream version, I've put both together and the wood version has all the holes drilled and is just better finished. You will find it easier to hang the back panels if you use a stapler with nails in it to pin the panels into place before fixing them with the supplied nails.
