French Sourdough Starter - 4 oz.

Just activated it the day before yesterday and fed again yesterday. With the discarted cup I made a great batch of sourdough waffles that turned out to be very fluffy, crispy and tasty!!

It's hard to know what to say. This is exactly what it claims to be. Unless you live on a hillside next to a vineyard you will need this for baking. The quality is excellent. The price is right.

I am trying it out tonight, and will return for a better (or worse) review as soon as I see if it does what it is suppose to do, being that it was over a hundred degrees when it arrived in the mail and the post office-person neglected to bring it to my door...(they jammed it in my mail box to the point where I could not take the package out without literally cutting open the box and (sides of the box) containing the item to access it). I can forgive the post office-person to a certain degree for both underestimating the actual door opening of my mailbox, and not bothering to bring it up to my apartment because of the excessive heat.I am also wondering why the people who shipped this product did not (?) check in advance what the temperatures were predicted to be for my area.

This is NOT real sourdough starter. Authentic sourdough starter does NOT contain sugar, yeast, cornmeal or buttermilk, as this does.Unfortunately, I missed seeing the list of ingredients before I ordered this -- I didn't look for such a list because I never dreamed it would contain any such adulterating stuff. But I'm kicking myself for not doing so.I'm one of thousands of people who eat authentic sourdough bread (and that bread only) because we can't eat sugar, yeast or corn. Obviously I'm not going to be able to use this stuff, wasted $9 on it, and $5 on the shipping (which is too high, by the way) for such a small package.Another thing: this came in a plastic four-ounce plastic bottle. That's a huge amount of starter if one is dealing with real sourdough starter. When I started reading the directions for using it and it said to use the WHOLE BOTTLE at once, I couldn't believe it -- until I saw that ingredient list. When you put in stuff that's not supposed to be there, it clearly makes it much less potent.I'm still angry about this -- at myself for buying this junk and at Nichols Garden Nursery for selling this as "French Sourdough Starter." Yeah, sure it is! .

I've never maintained sourdough before, but so far this seems to be working for me. The product arrived quickly and was well packaged. The instructions were clear on how to use and maintain the starter.

My only suggested improvement would be better intstructions. When I followed the included instructions I definitely got bread but it did not have a sour tang. After about 30 minutes of reading online forums I adjusted the method to make the bread and got not only a terrific sour tang but a great chewy crust.

Really nice easy to proof and have baked 20 loaves so far as well as the lightest crunchiest pizza crust ever. Very easy to keep rolling.
