Good MLK book for little ones
This is a good MLK book for little ones. My great grandfather's best friend was African American. They worked together, but could not eat lunch together. The cafeterias, restaurants, and most public places were segregated into White only and Black only. So my great grandfather and his best friend had to bring sacked lunches to work so they could sit together on a bench for lunch - a risky move if they were seen by the wrong people. Our children born today do not understand what we as a country went through. Back then people were forbidden to befriend, love, hang out with, hire, marry, or even stand next to someone solely based on their skin tone. There was REAL systemic racism permeating all parts of life - it was a very scary, difficult, and heart breaking time. But by the time I grew up, I could walk freely down the road holding hands with an African American without any threat to my life and my parents told me I could marry anyone I wanted. And today, my son plays with kids of every skin tone - he is completely blind to race. This MLK book helps my son understand what the world used to look like and how much freedom we now have. Sure there are still things to improve, but those improvements will not be made by dividing us into race boxes and blaming each other, but by seeing every single one of us as all one family, one people, and one nation.... people who are all beautiful, wonderful, and precious regardless of their different appearances. I long for a time when MLK's dream comes true.... where we are judged solely based on our character and no one notices our skin tones anymore.Overall, this is such an important book. Every household in the USA should read it to their children on MLK day and remember how bad it used to be, how far we have come, and how far we still have to go.
