The Kvitlach game and deck were created by Hassidic Jews living in Austrian Poland during the late 18th or 19th century. Piatnik & Söhne of Vienna was the largest producer of these cards during the 19th and 20th centuries which helped spread the game among Jews living in Austria-Hungary and their North American diaspora. Most European players were killed during the Holocaust and the number of North American players has dwindled.Kvitlech, also spelled Kvitlach or Quitlok, (Yiddish: קווטלך, literally "notes", "slips") is a game similar to blackjack played in some Jewish homes during the Hanukkah season. Hanukkah card playing was a traditional cover for Torah study, which had been outlawed for Jews by a Syrian-Greek king in the 2nd century BCE (presumably Antiochus IV Epiphanes). The original kvitlech deck consisted of 31 numbered cards, artistically colored, representing the 31 kings against whom the Israelites fought under Joshua, a biblical prelude to the Maccabean victory. DO. NOT. BUY.
Do not waste your money. Not only are these poor quality cards, they are poor quality counterfeits. They literally photocopied the original onto cheap paper stock. Pathetic.Look for the authentic Piatnik Kvitlach Cards elsewhere on Amazon. This is not it.
