Pocketknife Making for Beginners

Great how-to. No heat treat info.
This is a great step-by-step how- to for building a slip-joint knife. That is a knife with a back-spring that holds the blade open but does not lock. A Swiss Army knife is an example of a multi-blade slip-joint.The authors go through every step needed with really good text and photographs. The translator must have known the subject matter because the translation is excellent. This book does not cover hardening and tempering, the knives the authors made were sent out for professional heat treatment. Everything else is covered.I would say you should have some experience with working metal and a drill press would be really good to have but not absolutely necessary. It is a spiral bound book, this is good because it lies flat for reference in the shop but it is also somewhat fragile. If you are ham-handed or impatient you might tear a page, just be careful and ease the pages along. The book measures 6" by 9".I am enjoying this book and when I get done with my current batch of knives I will begin building a couple folders.

Excellent book
I The author takes you through, step by step the building of a very functional of both a slip joint, and a friction lock folding knife. This book uses absolute basic tools, or if you prefer, you can substitute power tools, but it would be for me more enjoyable to use the basic tools. There are a ton of good pictures, and the explanations are thorough. I would highly recommend, for beginner, and experienced makers, or someone considering making.

Diamond Jim -- East Texas
It's an ok book but I prefer a back spine thats glued in either a hard cover or paper back and not on a spiral binding. Contents are ok for someone who knows absolutely nothing about making knives.
