A Wonderful Testament to Well Written Science Texts
I had the opportunity to listen to Gary Siuzdak speak at a small mass spec forum. He not only has a magnetic aura about him, but his lecture was engaging and progressive (at least to me).So as I was looking for more info on mass spec, I found this book and all of the fantastic reviews. I decided to buy due to the great reviews and that I knew from Mr. Siuzdak's appearance it should be easy to follow. There are very few scientific texts out there of which the authors allow for the science to make sense. So its either most of these scientific gurus never read a fiction/romance novel before in their entire life OR they really don't understand the science behind the science themselves in order to explain the field in a way that's engaging and non-cluttered with extraneous information. So when I find rare gems like this book or The Cell by Albert's, et al, I get excited.I got the book and was disappointed by how petite and light and thin it was, not like your usually heavy academic book of knowledge. However, after reading beyond the cover this book is packed full of dense material explained really well, with so little words.Working in a lab where mass spec is used, I found that this book covered all of the small annoying questions I had at the back in my mind of which I filed away and grew to become an annoying subconscious dark cloud of mass spec baggage. Also because mass spec can be used in many different ways beyond the scope of what I currently use, this text helps me become prepared in any potential field switch.Mr. Siuzdak makes mass spec accessible and sexy.

a good beginner reference
This is an excellent book for the mass spectrometry novice who wants to get a quick understanding of the necessary basics. As mass spec goes mainstream with the genomics and proteomics world, guidebooks like this will become very useful also for qualifying peoples' expectations of the technology. This is a good book also for teachers and students who may not want to get into the deep details but would like to get a good overview of what the art and science of mass spec is about. The book is well-balanced between the technical instrumentation background and discussion of actual applications and types of experiments. The work is fluently written and easy to digest. I run a small mass spec analytical group and have lent this book to several of my colleagues who just "wanted to get an idea" of what I do. They were all very happy with this text. I have used the book as a reference several times in preparation of more general overview talks.

Should be on any biotechnology practicioner's shelf
I love this book. I spent years selling GC-MS and LC-MS, then worked on software applications. But coming from a biology background, I appreciated the simple yet thorough introduction in Siuzdak's text for the applications commonly used in biotechnology. This is an excellent, well-written introductory text. I recommend it highly.
