From a non-dog lover...
I must admit, I was no dog lover before reading this book and am still not one. I grew up with a dog in the house throughout my entire life, all the way until I entered college. This book reminded me of the sweet times I've had with my pets, but also of the many challenges of owning a dog. After reading this, I don't think I'll ever own more than one at a time, and if I do own one, it'll only be a lap dog. Big dogs, and all that comes with them, are for the birds.Being a theologian, I especially liked the part questioning the validity of Darwinism. I've read how Darwin pokes holes in his own theory, but Jason's argument about humans' soft feet and lack of fur showed brilliant insight into the weaknesses of Darwinian theory.

a heartfelt story of love, pain, and recovery
I was a little surprised that I enjoyed the book; as I am not much of a dog person. I had a dog growing up; but as an adult, it just didn't seem me. That said, I found myself immediately pulled into the book as I learned a little bit about each of Jason's dogs. I enjoyed following the story as it takes the reader from Louisiana to Texas. Though sad at times, the book also treated the topic with honesty and a realism that I found interesting. In truth, this is a story of a man's life and his love for his dogs. Pick it up and read it. I think you'll enjoy. Well done Mr. Phinney!

*Have tissues handy before you read this book.* I am not quite sure how I found out about the author or this book. I believe it came across facebook somehow. Anyways, I ordered it and waited patiently for it to get here. I spent the first night up until 2am reading it and he had me in tears. I never met the author but I felt like he was a close friend and I was actually there during the ups and downs going through all of this with him. I have never read a book in which I felt like I knew someone so well after reading it. I went to bed the first night cuddling my dogs a little tighter than usual. The second night I stayed up until 3am and finished the book. It is definately the author's story and any animal lover can relate to it. We all have a story about the animals that have come into our lives. I have often thought about writing my story except that I am not a writer. I am an avid animal lover and rescuerer and find it sweet that there is actually a man out there that feels the same way about animals. It gives me hope that one day I will meet a man with a huge heart who REALLY loves animals and isn't just saying what I want to hear to go on a date. By the end of the book I wanted to meet the pups in the story and give them all a big hug. They are very lucky pups to have found such a great Dad.

A thousand sunny days, absolutely.
I met the author at the dog show, bought the book that he autographed for me and was so excited about reading it, unfortunately I stopped at different booths and after a while I realized I had forgotten the book somewhere, after going back and looking I never found it again. I wanted to read it so much so I ordered it on Amazon. When I received it I could not put it down. I loved every page of it. Jason brings you into his life and share all his tribulations and his dogs. He made me laugh, cry, want to meet his dogs andhug them. The story is beautifully written and you feel part of the family, it has dark and sad moments and you feel his pain, especially if you have gone thru something similar yourself but the dogs always bring you thru and give you hope there is light at the end of the tunnel. Having five dogs myself I can relate to the chaos sometimes. I just didn't want the book to end, it felt like leaving an old friend I am looking forward to more books from Jason. I wish I had talked to him longer at the dog show.

I didn't want it to end!
As they say..."you'll laugh, you'll cry"! The story is so compelling that I truly did not want it to end.Jason's writing paints such a great picture of the characters and situation that you feel you are there with them. There's never a dull moment...either you can't wait to find out which dog comes into the story next (and why and how), in tears over the loss of one or laughing at the antics of the interactions of the dogs and the people in their lives. If you are involved in rescue work, you'll have such empathy and relate so well to the story; if you've never rescued a dog, this book just might leave you running to your local shelter! It's not just about the dogs, either. It's about relationships. It left me really thinking about my marriage and how the little things that cause us to get upset at each other are just not worth it. It makes you think about what's really important in life and that it can all slip away before you realize what has happened. A great reminder to be grateful for what we have and to cherish and nurture our relationships (people and animals).

A round of ap-paws!
This book was recommended to me by a friend. I resisted at first, for I have always been a cat person, and dogs always seemed too needy, too dependent.Phinney’s book quickly dispelled these notions. What I had thought of as traits of dependency and neediness, Phinney showed to be an expression of a dog’s unconditional love for its master.Something else I did not anticipate was the emotional rollercoaster the book took me through. On several occasions, I found myself talking to Jason and cheering for the dogs. Jason! Don’t take Lucas back to the shelter! Jason! Please save Daisy!Embedded within the several dog walks and adventures is the story of Jason’s strained relationships with his dad and his brother, and most importantly, his wife, Jennifer. I found myself wondering how things would be if humans could “live in the moment” like dogs – letting go of the past, not holding grudges, enjoying every day for what it is.If you are a dog lover, you will love this book. If you aren’t, read the book anyways. It will make you one. A must read!
