Read This First!
Get this book along with Dr. Wright's "Stay Young and Sexy" (silly title but serious info.) to fully understand your hormones and how they need to be balanced all of your life, even after menopause. These 2 books saved me hundreds of dollars in experimenting with doctors and their archaic methods. DO NOT TAKE standard prescription Estrogen,(made from horse urine)which is the ONLY option offered by 98% of the medical doctors out there, BEFORE you read these 2 books, PLEASE. I am 49, was having hot flashes every 20 minutes, oh yes... I understand exactly why you are researching this topic. Good for you! These books are for women before, during, and after the final phases of menopause. For 30 dollars you could save your heart, your bones, your breasts, your sex life, and maybe your life! I also liked Suzanne Somer's books which refer back to these 2 books, but they are the basic ones to start with. Don't be a mindless lemming and do whatever your doctor tells you. After you read these books you will have 6 times more information than your medical doctor has on the subject. They only get 4-12 hours in hormone education in school. Scary, I know, but true. I also have benefited from an herbal option from a website called "Women to Women.com for helpful information. Also, Dr. Christiane Northrup's books are wonderful. Hang in there sister, do not go quietly into that dark night, you will come through this stronger, healthier, and wiser! We need and deserve BHRT! Read this, and all you can that's current.
I'm glad Ms. Hawkins wrote the book. We desperately need more experts to speak up on BHRT. It's nice to hear a pharmacist's thoughts and wisdom. I like that she gives specific dosing information, such as what ranges are the norm - Page 101: "women usually need only 5 or 10 mg of DHEA". On page 66 she speaks of appropriate hormone ratios. This is the kind of information we need.Ms. Hawkins likes to include symptom lists in her chapters, but it seems like "filler" to me. Page 18: Symptoms of Low Estrogen - "headaches" (among others) and page 19 Symptoms of High Estrogen - "headaches" (among others). All this to say if you have headaches, your Estrogen levels are not balanced. Symptoms of Metabolic Imbalance, page 100: "obesity" (low DHEA) "increased fat mass" (low HGH), "difficulty losing weight" (low testosterone), "unexplained weight gain" (low thyroid). It goes to show why treatment can be tedious and requires great professional knowledge, skill, and experience. Maybe this is her point with these lists and I suppose they could be somewhat helpful if your doctor is having trouble identifying the cause of your imbalances. It helps to be an informed patient and sometimes you can make your own best diagnosis. In other words, it gives you information that may be helpful when talking to your doctor about treatment. There seems to be much talk of creams in the BHRT community but little of sublingual dosing. There's little mention of troches and buccals in other books. I'm happy to see Ms. Hawkins does recognize this kind of dosing. My FIACP certified compounding pharmacist and doctor tell me they have the highest efficacy and least unwanted metabollites.I'm grateful for the information and effort by Ms. Hawkins. I gave it four stars because 1/3 of the 170 page book is dedicated to alternative (non-hormonal) treatments. For me, that's another approach entirely. But I consider this a must read for anyone considering or undergoing HRT.On another note: I've been practicing BHRT for 1 and 1/2 years and have no more hot-flashes, night sweats, headaches, dryness and discomfort in places you don't want it. I believe balanced hormones are protecting me from Alzheimer's, heart-disease and breast cancer. Insurance companies don't recognize it, so I have to pay cash but it's worth it. Sisters, we need to step up and convince our insurance companies and government that we deserve recognition and coverage for BHRT!

Very instructive
It's very instructive and easy reading for non physicians. I will have this book as a book for consulting. And already bought another to my endocrinologist in Brazil.

A wealth of Information
I've read a lot of books, and this is one of the BEST books on Bioidentical Hormone Replacement! It even has some good information on testosterone replacement for women which is hard to find because there is not much information out there.

excellent resource for practitioners
Nice to see this written from a pharmacist's perspective. Who better to understand and explain the function and chemical evaluation behind bio-identicals.

Amazing information for BHRT
For any woman who wants to start hormone therapy and don’t know where to start this is a must. It walks you through all the hormones and how high/low symptoms present. It also given you recommendations on what types of hormones to get as well as doses. I highlighted sooo much when I was reading and constantly refer back to it on a regular basis when dealing with my drs. I STRONGLY urge all perimenopausal women to get this book and educate yourself so you don’t suffer needlessly.
