Wonderful photos, splendid book
This is an excellent book, and it should appeal to all Arsenal fans, not just the shirt-collecting anoraks. As one of the latter, I can say that there are quite a few books on football shirts/soccer jerseys out there, but few, if any, have the same high-quality pictures that this one does. (Well, that's not quite true anymore I guess; there have now been copycat versions of this book created for other clubs). Shakey and James keep it interesting throughout, and the focus is very much on the shirts themselves, and not the players who wore them, or the matches they were worn in. And that's exactly how it should be of course; this is an illustrated history of the Arsenal shirt, not the club. There are a few gaps in the line-up, but that's only because the authors were unable to find examples of some of the shirts, no matter how hard they tried. It's a bit light on the goalkeeper shirts too, but there's potentially a whole separate book needed for those. Hmmm, there's an idea... No shorts and socks either; it's all very much above the waistline (sunshine). Oops, I just quoted one of the worst songs of the 1980s, sorry about that.Rumor/Rumour has it there's a 2nd edition coming, in which some of the "missing links" aren't missing anymore. Let's hope they can finally get hold of one of those 1977-78 away shirts with the huge central cannon. Hey, I did say I was an anorak. So, great book, nice pictures, and a must-have for all Arsenal fans, even the most polyester agnostic.

A great gift for any Arsenal fan or any football fan in general!
I purchased this and got the "Subscriber's Edition" from the publisher, not from Amazon. The book is in just one word: Excellent. It is well researched and the photos are fantastic. It makes a great gift for a fan of The Arsenal, but also for any football/soccer fan. It's an illustrated history of match-worn shirts. I wish there were more from the past, but those are hard to come by. It's really a fascinating look at the history of an iconic shirt and team. I think this book will inspire fans of other teams to do a similar treatment.

After that Arsenal shirts popped up like bookmarks in my childhood and adolescence
As a 7 year old it was the yellow and blue away colours that first captivated me. When I finally got my hands on a replica strip three years later it wasn't the red and white home kit but the Alan Sunderland vintage made famous in the 1979 'Five Minute Final'.After that Arsenal shirts popped up like bookmarks in my childhood and adolescence. From the Umbro years to the magical early Adidas kits. I can remember seeing these shirts modeled by the likes of Graham Rix and Charlie Nicholas in Match and Shoot magazines and waiting desperately for my birthday to get my own. These are treasured memories for me and I suspect for many others, and it was a real thrill to see that the authors have treated the subject with the reverence it deserves. Curating something like the Arsenal shirt is a big responsibility and you can tell from the quality of the product that the project must have been a real labour of love.I stopped buying replica shirts after the club vandalised that beautiful old crest and as I browsed the book I automatically found myself gravitating towards the 70s and 80s kits. The best endorsement I can give the book is that flipping through the pages took me back to my childhood - in the same way and old song can do - to old heroes and epic matches.I'm looking forward to exploring the book further and finding out the full stories behind these beautiful old shirts. Thank you to everyone involved in producing this wonderful book. Highly recommended.
