A valuable learning tool
This book was designed for use by a mature learner who either is studying recorder with a teacher or is already a competent musician learning soprano recorder. There is very little instructional material, but there are many interesting short pieces perfect for the learner. I am studying recorder on my own using "The Recorder Guide" by Kulbach and Nitka and find the Sweet Pipes book an excellent supplement.

THE BEST METHOD BOOK FOR SERIOUS BEGINNERS
The SWEET PIPES RECORDER METHOD BOOK is the best book for serious beginners.I would recommend it for small group lessons or private instruction. The songsincluded in Chapters 10 and up are NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association)approved. This book is not suitable for a large class of beginners and notrecommended for young children (7-10) unless they are receiving private instruction. For group lessons of elementary school children, I recommend RECORDER KARATE, whichis highly motivating and gives an excellent foundation.

Five Stars
Wonderful book for older beginners, i like that songs are not children's songs, although it assumes you know the notations, which for the very beginner could hinder your self learning. I also have another sweep pipes beginner book titled "recorder time" a beginning method for group or individual instruction, which explains the notations and would be helpful

OK,but too short.
It's a good start but you'll need more books in a week.

Sweet Pipes--Sweet!
There cannot be a better value out there. As an adult beginner I started at page one and worked my way through the twelve lessons in about 3 months. The methodology is incremental so each new piece re-enforces earlier studies. The music is very interesting, with most work from the 13th through the 17th century. I was challenged and rewarded with gradually building confidence and competence. You cannot go wrong with this introduction.
