This lighter has been known by other names such as shepherds lighter or rope lighter. What makes it unique is that conventional fuel is not needed, and there is no flame. The method of operation is to strike the attached flintwheel to create sparks, which are caught on a charred cotton rope, that has been partially withdrawn from a metal tube housing. This was typically used for lighting cigarettes which does not require a flame to accomplish. Once an ember is generated, it is windproof, and is extinguished by retracting the cord back inside the tube and an attached lid snuffs it out. This flame-less feature made it somewhat covert and was often used during WWII. The windproof feature is also advantageous and was useful to shepherds who were out in the windy field while watching their flocks. It is an easy way to create a live ember, when, combined with tinder, can be coaxed into a flame for starting campfires NOTE 1. Just what I ordered
I was honestly worried about getting exactly what I ordered because I read the previous product review and the person said they didn’t receive the product they ordered. But here it is! Looks/feels/functions great!

Awesome lighter
Gimmicky looking photo for it but this is a great little trench lighter. Perfect for emergency situations, survival and what not. Can also just be used for everyday use. I haven't used it much because for me it is an emergency item but I have no doubt it would light up a fire or your favorite cigarette brand.

Instant ember maker....who knew ?
I bought this more or less out of curiosity. To my surprise, the rope quickly caught a spark and started to glow. This could be really useful in the field on windy days. No fluid needed so it's a nice backup for matches / lighter. Not going to replace the ferro rod, but it's a nice addition to the firemaking kit.

What a cool lighter works as advertised easy-to-use and I think would be great for a camping backup lighter. This is a great gift for any man fun to use and fun to show off. This is a great part of our history and it shows how vintage items can be more reliable than modern items at this price you cannot go wrong.

There’s a company called Bic.
Save yourself several dollars and a headache and go to your nearest gas station. They have lighters for like a buck, that work great!! Kind of a cool novelty tho..
