"But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love. God showed how much He loved us by sending His one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him...Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other" (1 John 4:8-11). We are called to love others as Christ would. Christ died for us, forgave our sins, & loves us unconditionally despite the fact that we don't deserve it. So "let us not love [merely] in theory or in speech but in deed and in truth (in practice and in sincerity)" whether or not we feel like it or think that they deserve it (1 John 3:18).
