Great (and dangerously easy) way to keep butter ready to spread.
When I first ordered this, I thought I might be able to just store the butter inside the crock part, and keep it in the fridge. When it arrived, I was skeptical because the bell where you actually store the butter is part of the lid. I'd not heard of a butter bell before, but figured that the French know what they are doing with dairy :) and that I'd give it a chance. I wasn't sure how the cold water method would keep the butter from turning rancid on the counter, but we are now converts. I change the water daily, rather than the recommended 3 days, because I'm still a little unconvinced and our house is heated. The good part about this item? Butter is kept fresh, soft and ready to spread whenever you want it. The bad part? Butter is kept fresh, soft and ready to spread whenever you want it!!! It makes it ridiculously (and dangerously?) easy to slap that stuff on any piece of passing toast or roll. Before, we might not have put that much butter on something because we forgot to take it out to soften in time. Now? That's a thing of the past. And since I make my own butter at home in the Kitchen-Aid mixer, it's even more glorious to slather homemade butter on homemade bread and top it with homemade strawberry jam. It's the trifecta of breakfast goodness.Get one and become a convert yourself.P.S. My husband was trying to tell me something about this and couldn't think of the word "crock", so he called it a butter frog. It's been called that ever since. (perhaps he was thinking of a garlic frog, for keeping garlic)

Works great!
First of all, I had never seen one of these before it showed up on my Amazon feed. It intrigued me. I got the blue one, but was slightly disappointed in the color, as it wasnโt quite as dark blue as the picture gives you a sense of. There is also not as much of weathering near the ridges on the side. Oh well, but functionally this thing is great!Essentially you put fresh button into the bell of this thing and store it upside down in water to keep it fresh and on the counter, so you can have soft fresh butter anytime. Interesting? We received it and promptly put it to use. Like most butter dishes though, you keep replenishing the butter realizing at some point you need to let it go empty to clean it. But thatโs hard to do, as it does such a good job. Unlike a tradition butter dish you donโt get that dried out deeper yellow color going on, after the butter is in there for awhile. There is no oxidizing as the butter is protected from the air by the water.I guess Iโm going to have to buy two of them!

I only wish we had this sooner!
We have been using this butter crock for almost 5 years now and our only complaints are 1. we didn't know about this sooner 2. we have to wait for butter to soften before re-filling the crock! This is truly one of my favorite things in the kitchen. For almost 5 years we have had soft, spreadable butter that has never gone rancid. We do change the water about every 2-3 days, though on occasion it has been 4-5 if we have been out of town for a long weekend or something of that nature. This perfectly fits a stick of butter. It will NOT fit a full package of Kerry Gold butter. The crock we received was a perfect match to the picture posted here. I took pictures in sunlight and CFL light so you can see the color. The picture with the box of Puffs is to give a visual representation of size (it's a large box of Puffs, not the tiny ones).I highly recommend this crock for anyone who wants to have soft, spreadable, real butter available anytime!

I love this butter crock
My butter kept getting an oily rancid taste in the butter dish, even though I was buying 100% milk butter, I even tried the organic sweet cream and it still would spoil quickly. My friend suggested a butter bell and it was a perfect solution. I have had this now for a couple years and through a move and it is very durable. If we go long periods without using butter, it will still spoil, or mold, but not as fast as in a dish. I also found that although you can have problems with melting or dropping in the water in the summer, or if stored in a hot place (direct sun, next to the stove, etc), it was less severe than in a butter dish. Refilling is easy, and it hold a full stick. I find it is easier to refill if you leave the butter to soften on the counter for 30 minutes or so. I then use a spoon or the wrapper to press the butter in tight to the cleaned crock. Change the water as often as directed.

Wish we had discovered this a long time ago
Our family uses butter. Hate margarine and do not believe that it is "more healthy" for you. (Come on--it is only a molecule away from being plastic.)At any rate, we moved to Arizona. Yes, it is nice and warm here. Not practical to leave butter out on a dish because it will just melt by noon. Always was frustrating to have to keep butter in the fridge and pull it out and scrape shavings off to spread on toast or what have you. We were wondering if there was some nifty gadget that would keep butter spreadable but not melted. After searching on Amazon, we found butter crocks. I'm sure they've been around for a long time, but we were ignorant of their existence. It works like a charm. Very easy to maintain. We now have spreadable butter all day long in any temperature! Like I said, I wish we had discovered this thing a long time ago.My wife loves the design and color. There are other brands and designs out there, so take your pick. But this one is really nice and adds some decorative class to the table.I highly recommend this.

Yay, perfect butter.
Great! Love it. Just don't forget to change the water. ....speaking of which...must go change the water... Yup, butter is still good and spreadable, mind the watery layer on top when the bell is full of butter.. For those who can't abide sogginess, a couple of gentle flicks while firmly holding the bell's base dislodges the droplets easily.
