In A Silent Way

What is there to say about this "In a Silent Way"?
MOFI has crafted from one sonic masterpiece a special made-for-vinyl aural treat-ment from, of course, the original master tapes assembled by Teo Macero and co. There hasn't been a decent vinyl LP in years since the dreadful "Columbia Digital" collection was pressed. Fast forward to the 2010s and here we have MOFI not merely reproducing the album but treating the EQ and the mix so it sounds superb and right... for a vinyl 33 1/3 LP.Comparing this to the most recent CD release is futile, some may say. But the all-analog chain from master tape to pressing plant to LP-in-beautiful-cover still lives on and the dynamics are indeed great and there is that peculiar warmth - an overused word to describe vinyl, but this album's electric keyboards and quieted trumpet and overall sonic vibrations whispers warm, fuzzy aural bliss... So why not try "In A Silent Way" as it was meant to be: analog, acoustically perfected for the vinyl medium by the folks at MOFI.FYI: These are selling fast and I don't expect many of them to be around for sale at their original prices soon.

Top sound quality from MOFI
One of Miles Davis great albums, I am not going to comment on the music, anyone looking to buy a MOFI pressing already knows what music they are buying. I am using a highly modified Technics SL-1200M3D, Hagerman Cornet 2 phono stage modified to an octal hybrid, a Step Up Transformer I built from Jensen transformers and a Denon DL310MKII cartridge. This Mobile Fidelity reissue does not disappoint. The sound quality is up to par with the best MOFI releases that I have heard. Crisp and clear with a wide soundstage. No surface noise at all (I cleaned the record, as I do all of mine, before playing it for the first time). If you like this Miles Davis album and want an audiophile type of pressing this is it.

The Great Miles Davis
One of the greatest Jazz albums every recorded. I say Jazz but it is beyond a named musical genre. I first bought this album in 1970 and wore a few of them out until tapes and then CDs came out. Even wore out a tape of his album. It is simple but a very intricate musical piece. Miles Davis was and still is a music innovator, always ahead of the pack. This album broke with the traditional Jazz circle and is still way ahead of anything people are recording or writing today. If you are tired of the smooth jazz scene and need some ' new directions in music', this is it. What followed was Bitches Brew and A Tribute To Jack Johnson, light years ahead of anything you have ever heard in the Jazz realm. The side men on this album are all great musicians in their own right, beautiful contributions by all involved.

Warm, cuddly aliens in spacesuits taking naps on dark blue clouds
Although Bitches Brew receives most of the attention as the breakthrough album from the "Electric Miles" period, this is the one that really stands out at the top of the heap for me. A mesmerizing and beautifully crafted album, In a Silent Way manages to sound warm and inviting while at the same time completely alien, foreign and unearthly. At first listen you may not really appreciate the full power and intrigue that this album offers but as you read more about the production techniques used by Teo Macero to piece this together, the fullness and quality of the presentation becomes even more fascinating. Give this album some time to soak in and you'll be as obsessed with it as I am in due time.

Classic review for a classic album
If someone else said it better, why try to beat it? From Lester Bangs in Rolling Stone, 1969: "This is the kind of album that gives you faith in the future of music. It is not rock and roll, but it's nothing stereotyped as jazz either. All at once, it owes almost as much to the techniques developed by rock improvisors in the last four years as to Davis' jazz background. It is part of a transcendental new music which flushes categories away and, while using musical devices from all styles and cultures, is defined mainly by its deep emotion and unaffected originality."

MFSL does it again
It's MSFL. You're likely not going to find a better sounding copy of this record. This is probably my favorite Miles album. It sounds like nothing else that's ever been produced. It's expensive but if this is something you'll be spinning throughout your life, it's worth every penny.

Vinile
