sweet sound with a lot of nuance
Had this for 2 months. Before my staple was an Enrico student violin & I'm reviewing from the perspective of a hobbyist.I think it's insane value compared to other instruments in this price range (referring to the $213 promotional price).Very bright, sweet sound with a lot of nuance.Teachers and musicians frequently remarked on how beautiful the Enrico sounded and this one sounds better. What I'm saying is I'm not a pro, but I'm also not comparing the Vienna strings to some malformed instrument producing infernal cat scratches or something.I noticed a big difference in the quality of the bridge and pegs compared to my previous violin, it's much easier to tune without resorting to the fine tuners. I find it's almost too easy to play, as I hadn't realised how much work I was putting into preventing the other violin sounding raspy, dull, shrill etc. When I first picked it up and put it to my shoulder I had an inkling of how much difference there was between the craftsmanship of this violin and the kind I'm familiar with. The centre of gravity and distribution of weight is completely different, it makes it much easier to play and frees up the left hand to be nimble, it's much easier to keep it correctly positioned while walking or moving around and makes my playing more carefree. The sound carries surprisingly well for a bright-sounding violin. I've tested it in large rooms, small rooms and outdoors, sadly haven't had the chance to try it in an auditorium space. It has a consistent er...let say texture, across all the strings, by which I mean it doesn't get throaty or booming on the g string and tinny or shrill on the E, all the strings have a common consistency to their sound, string changes are smooth without having to try. This is something I haven't ever noticed in either cheap or expensive violins, I'm not sure if it has something to do with it being new and not yet ruined by a player's idiosyncrasies, or if it's a direct result of the way it's made. I've never tried a brand new intermediate or professional violin, only antique ones and if anything some of them are more idiosyncratic than student ones.Case was roomy and sturdy, it didn't come with a lot of extras, no shoulder rest or tuner for example, but honestly, if you have a kid that needs a violin it's better to spend money on the quality violin, that on a package deal with barley functional knick knacks and extras :P I liked the strings it has and the rosin that came with it.I would give it another star but the bow bothered me, the screw doesn't seem to have the range of mobility other bows have. It moves stiffly and after a few turns, won't respond. So u go from nothing to super tight in 2 turns. Atm that's not a problem because I can get the slackness and tightness I need but that may change in the future. Also I didn't like that the delivery people left it out on the porch, I live in vegas, it's very hot and dry. If this will also bother you it might be worth discussing delivery options with the vendor. I would have preferred it if it didn't come strung, I would rather have put the strings on and set up the bridge up myself.I hope now there's a review up it will encourage other people to try out these lovely instruments. I'm happy I took a chance on it.
