Model of a purpose-driven life
Bonhoeffer modeled the importance and influence of a life lived with selfless purpose.

Good picture, but it helps to know the story before you watch it
Too many gaps; that is, a lack of explanatory segues. Dates, or dates together with place names, at the bottom of the screen would help differentiate the different episodes in his life. But certainly worth watching -- probably more than once.

Bonhoeffer witnessed to the truth
No cheap grace with Pastor Bonhoeffer. He knew that to be a true follower of Christ was costly and he was a man of conviction. Very poignant scenes with his fiancee, Maria. Acting was excellent.

Question
But where the ones who did this ever punished . Are did they escape like so many others. To this day mans inhumanity to man continues .

Modern Christian martyr
An outstanding production, I had read the book by Eric Metaxas a couple years ago and it helped to know the entire story of his life and death, but this movie was well acted and producers did a credible job of summarizing the last few years of Bonhoeffer's life and the faith that sustained him through his resistance against the Nazi regime. Moving story that addresses the issues Bonhoeffer dealt with as he was walking the line between being true to his Christian faith and his loyalty to Germany. Bonhoeffer is one of my life heroes.

Original and Thought-Provoking
I watched this film, knowing only little about Bonhoffer, and was moved by his courage and faith. Incredible! I particularly liked the screenwriting; they did not overwrite or over-dramatize. They let Bonhoffer's words and actions speak for themselves. Some dialogue comes from his own writings - and what he says is original and thought-provoking. The screenwriters and actors conveyed the horror of the Nazis in WWII without dramatizing every detail of their brutality and violence; it was a welcome contrast from how most modern movies work today. Highly recommend. Well-done!

Wrong name
Bonhoeffer is played by Ulrich Tukur not Ulrich Noethen.

TV drama of the Bonhoeffer resistance to Hitler
An inspired Christian retelling of one of the main resistance movements martyrs, within the evangelical church in Germany, against the general capitulation of the established church in Germany to the Nazis. Quiet acceptance of the new religion of National socialism within the German church was met with little opposition. The exceptions, to the general rule, were a number of leading theologians. The most famous of these theologians was Bonhoffer, who exposed Hitler as a false Messiah and accused the German church and people of practicing idolatry. His imprisonment, to silence his opposition, and eventual murder by the German government in power, are told in a tv drama style story.

An incredible story
I had been trying to get hold of this DVD for some time and it wasn't easy! The story of Bonhoeffer is a truly amazing one. I would encourage anyone interested in the history of World War II to watch this.

I enjoyed the book much more than this film.
I thought the film rather "bitty" and not worthy of the subject. It left far to much to the imagination and failed togive sufficient emphasis to the piety and virtue of Bonhoeffer and for the most part similarly failed to convey the tensions under which this man lived. All in all, rather disappointing I thought.

Moving and enlightening
This gentle and illuminating dvd is worth watching many times. It reveals many of the the hidden aspects of the fight against Nazism and the German' risk takers 'who put themselves in the firing line for others.

Bonhoeffer -- The Cost of Discipleship.
Everything about this film is clunky apart from its subject matter. I found myself deeply moved by the depth of Bonhoeffer's commitment even as portrayed in this rather shallow account. The last few minutes are mesmerising and I have watched it over and again. Watch it.
