AVOID USER ERROR. DO NOT PUNCTURE OR REMOVE TAPE
Printer: HP Photosmart C7280 All-In-OneI bought my HP printer in 2008 and have used it extensively for printing, copying, scanning, faxing. Always used HP 02 ink cartridges, and I don't want to think about how much money I've spent over the years on HP Genuine Ink. First let me say that the only issues I've ever had with my HP printer were invariably due to my ignorance. 10 years ago I knew absolutely nothing about computers or printers, being a (very) late-comer to these technologies. I'm almost embarrassed to say I didn't even know how to type. That is no longer the case. Today I'm quite comfortable replacing any component on my equally old HP Pavilion (just replaced the keyboard ... identical to original, and only about $16 ... works perfectly) and would feel no less at home replacing anything on my printer ... if it would ever break. But it looks and functions just like new, despite heavy use.The one thing I wasn't looking forward to was the day HP stopped manufacturing 02 ink. I had read many horror stories about using off brand ink, and of course everything from HP did nothing to alleviate my fears, practically guaranteeing that the moment I dared install non HP ink, my printer would instantly grind to a halt ... permanently ... forcing me to buy a costly new printer. If by some miracle, my printer didn't suffer a complete meltdown, at best I could expect obviously inferior print/copy quality (e.g., poor color reproduction, greenish hued blacks, streaks, smears) and the ever present worry that the printer was undoubtedly moments away from total collapse.Ok. Big project ahead of me. There will be Federal District Court deadlines to meet. Two separate very complex civil cases. And wouldn't you know it. HP 02 is out of production. Immediately the headlines flashed through my head. "DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!" "YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!" "HORRIBLE PRODUCT!!" "INK LEAKED EVERYWHERE!!" "MY PRINTER WAS DESTROYED!!" "DO NOT BUY!! WORST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE!!!" etc, etc. After taking the time to research the issue thoroughly, I determined that in virtually all cases where things went drastically wrong, the problem was 'user error'.I recently bought 3 complete sets of HI-VISION ink. 18 cartridges for under $27 plus tax, and free shipping. When they arrived, I removed my HP cartridges. Disconnected the power cord to the printer. Waited a minute for the power to fully discharge, then installed one full set. I did not make the (apparently common) mistake of poking holes in the tape, or attempt to remove the tape. I could feel the printer puncturing two holes in the tape as I secured each cartridge. I did not attempt to jockey the cartridges around. I connected the power cord, and turned on the printer. My printer, which had been known to fuss on occasion over Genuine HP Ink (Lt. Magenta Has Expired. Using Expired Ink Will Void Your Warranty. Replace With ... Very annoying. I'd just bought the set a couple months earlier.) had no issues at all with the HI-VISION ink. No warnings, nothing. The printer works flawlessly. Colors are vivid. Black is black. There have been no leaks. There WAS one issue ... one of the color cartridges was only 60% full. The rest showed 100% full. I had been shorted an entire 59 cents worth of ink. And I couldn't care less. The same thing had happened before with Genuine HP Ink. Only now we were talking 5, 6, 7, even 8 dollars worth of ink missing. And then that occasional 'expired' cartridge. 12, 13, 14 dollars thrown out the window. Too much bother to try to get a refund. My time is a lot more valuable to me than that. So, despite the missing ink, I have to say I could not be more pleased. And this company, in my opinion, deserves a 5 star rating. As far as I am concerned, I got a lot more than I paid for.PS: I just ran a self test diagnostic on the printer. It seems to be quite happy. It informed me (among numerous other things) that the ink cartridges were manufactured anywhere between 4/22/16 at the earliest to 6/17/16 at the latest and expire anywhere between 9/30/20 at the earliest (for the mathematically challenged, that's over 2 years from now) to 12/2/20 at the latest. Further, the color bars it printed are perfect, text is crisp, lines are sharp. Fairly screams "professional". Couldn't ask for more.
