A great overall story but…
This is actually one of my favorite Cussler books. The plot and characters and Dirk Pitt are just the right mix of exciting and outlandish. My only criticism is that the fairly significant events of the end are basically forgotten in future works, which is a shame.

I needed this!
I needed a copy of this book to complete my collection of Cussler books. It's old and the dust cover is in poor shape. I'm on the lookout for a cleaner copy.

It's not just about Dirk, at least in this book
I've read a number of the Dirk Pitt novels. I had a roommate after college who had a whole bunch of them and at that point I was spending a couple hours a day on the train, so I was going through books very quickly. He let me read the ones he had. That was about 15 years ago, and until recently I hadn't read another Cussler book. After having read what I think was the first of Cussler's Dirk Pitt stories a couple weeks ago, however, I decided to pick up Night Probe.Wow!This book hooked me really quick. After only a couple of chapters, every time I put it down I could't wait to pick it back up again. And at that point Dirk had yet to make more than a couple of quick appearances.Maybe I'm just not remembering things very well, but this book struck me as rather different than the Pitt novels I read before. It certainly doesn't focus nearly as much on Dirk and the other NUMA characters as many of the other books. It was also a less predictable mystery.I will admit that there were some threads in the story which weren't very well fleshed out and cut off rather abruptly. Even still, I found it a really fun, enjoyable read and would definitely recommend it.

One of Cussler's best
Having read almost all of the Dirk Pitt novels wildly out of order I have to say that the earlier ones are by far the best. Pitt is a little less superhuman; the dialogue not so overly mannered; plot structure not quite so formulaic.Night Probe gives us intrigue about a forgotten treaty that the UK would prefer to keep buried and the ruthless (not to mention downright illegal) machinations of the American government to find the last remaining copy. And enforce it. For good measure we also get a sub plot revolving around sightings of a ghost train.Mixed in for good measure are a huge number of murders, a major air disaster, rocket attacks, underwater rescues, high level political intrigue, secret agents, a ruthless psychopath and the introduction of Pitts long-term love interest. It's all complete nonsense of course. But it's brilliantly cobbled together with panache by an author I shall miss hugely.Thank you Mr Cussler for many hours of hugely enjoyable page-turning escapism.

usual adventure yarn
These are pretty well written with a hero who seems to be able to be indestructible and appears in all the NUMA files. That sounds cynical - not intentional - I enjoy all of these and would recommend them to anyone who enjoys and adventure story with no bad language and that won't keep you from sleeping if you read it at bedtime
