Dated but my son loves
My son - who loves trains - really loves this book. There is some non PC content mainly atoms native people.

One of my favorite child stories
I absolutely adored this story and the Caboose that got loose. It fueled my love of steam locomotives that I have to this day.

Problematic in parts
This is a cute story, and my grandson loves it (he is a train fanatic). But one section is completely racist: There are native Americans who chase the train for no reason, with the sort of artwork and speaking that one might expect from a book of this time (sort of like the Indians in Peter Pan, which Bill Peet also worked on, I've now learned). We painted out the racist words and images and substituted that part with a story about a train engineer, and my granddaughter drew new pictures. So it works now, and I guess it was good to have the conversation with my grandkids, but it's also a hassle.

Great book for children
Bill Peet is one of my favorite children's book authors. I have a set for myself, and I have bought his books for my grandchildren, and am now buying them for my great grandchildren. In my opinion, you can't go wrong with anything Bill has written. They are wonderful books.

Great book, and funny too
Great book, and funny too. My son loved it, and got the "humor" in it. Like most "Little Boys" he was really in to Trains, and this story and the pictures were a big hit for him. He especially liked the part about the Indians chasing Smokey in their Old Time Car. I'm now picking this book up for another Generation to enjoy.

the only thing is he didn't like the part where American natives attacking Smokey
my 5 yrs old son loves this book and he ended up memorizing the whole book. the only thing is he gets too scared when he is at the part where American natives attacking Smokey. However, this is the best train book we have read ever although we read so so many train books out there for my son, train lover

Cute story
The "clicketty-clacks" other rhymes make this story very appealing. Historical value: story is of the demise of the little steam engines that shunted freight cars whereas the big diesel engines ran between cities.

Classic story that would not be published today.
I remember hearing this story when I was a kid in the 70s. While it was written more than 50 years ago, it is a little insensitive about how Native Americans are portrayed in one part of the book. Neat story except for that part.
