Expen$ive but nice
This is a great tool for any one looking to go in depth into the ahadith of Bukhari's collection.Ibn hajar pays a great deal of attention to the slightest detail, breaking each Hadith down into small phrases and commenting on each portion. He even comments on the isnads giving helpful insights into narrators. Like any scholar ibn hajar also gives other scholars opinions often letting the reader know his preferences. The reader should be made aware that when the entire fath al bari is complete it will expand to about 20 volumes! This volume is the only one translated to date (December 2017), with a volume promised every few months by the editor/translator. This volume starts off with a LONG introduction which includes biographies of ibn hajar and Bukhari. Only 4 chapters of Ibn hajar's intro to Bukhari is included with the rest promised for the concluding volume. Ibn hajar's intro includes some notes on Bukhari's methods as to why he did or did not do specific things. At times ibn hajar shows the same kind of fanaticism as modern day Muslims express in regards to bukhari's sahih. However, it is refreshing to see Ibn hajar admit some tiny points that are not well known to us laymen (Bukhari abbreviated Hadith matn! Sometimes retaining only parts of matn that he saw relevant to the chapter title!).In the end after over a hundred pages on intro and "praises" of Bukhari and Ibn hajar the actual commentary on the ahadith begins. Only the first three chapters of the sahih on commented on in the end. I recommend this book for anyone who is serious about Hadith studies, because it will be expen$ive in the end.
