DARK BLOOD - MOVIE [DVD] [2012]

I don’t usually buy dvds anymore, but this was an exception. Truly one of the most underrated films as I feel this is River’s best role! Amazing cinematography, acting, directing, editing, musical score, dialogue, and atmosphere. I think the film only suffers from the lack of scenes that are missing. You can tell the missing scenes were crucial to the plot. I give it 5 stars, and I recommend it to any River Phoenix fans! This is truly one of my favorite movies now! R.I.P. George Sluizer and River Phoenix.

This was such a fun film. So glad they were able to release it. I love what he said about this film’s release being the third chair leg allowing it to stand, but the fourth leg is always missing. River is missed! Grateful for this final one. It left me wanting more River.

I’m so grateful to own this, and to be able to complete my River Phoenix movie collection. Even though it’s missing some scenes, it’s still an amazing film, and is yet another display of his incredible talent. I was hesitant to purchase because of other reviews that said it won’t play in the US. I was prepared to have to purchase an international dvd player, but to my pleasant surprise, it played just fine. Thank you!

This was such a good movie even with parts of it missing due to rivers death. Its such a shame that back in 1993 they didn’t try to wrap the movie up and release on behalf of rivers memory. I’m so glad George was able to finish this movie as best as he could. I’m a huge river fan and I’m so glad I was able to see this! For those of you watching this DVD in America if you have a PlayStation 4 you can watch the DVD with no issues. Otherwise you may run into the issue of this being a region 2 disk.

LOVED this movie, and for being incomplete, it’s pretty complete. Saw a review mentioning the DVD not working in someone’s player, but this was not an issue for me. My standard DVD player worked fine.

Loved it. Love River. This movie was worth buying it and the special international player.

Man, I was super excited to receive this dvd. I thought it was odd that the cover was in German. I was like, okay will this be subtitled? I wont be finding out because, apparently, I need some kind of International dvd player to view this. None of this information was detailed in the description of the dvd by the seller. I am extremely disappointed.

I have been a fan of river Phoenix for a long long time and Now for the first time his last ever film was released. This film wasn’t actually finished by River Phoenix. So the missing bits of the film on the narrated by the Director river plays a character called boy who waits for the end of the world a couple stop by and river phoenix character becomes obsessed with Judy Davis character stars, river Phoenix, Judy Davis, Jonathan Pryce , and Karen Black apparently river didn’t enjoy making this film. Having said that it is a good film I just wish with he had managed to finish this film but regardless it’s good to add your collection

Ende der 80er Jahre, spätestens aber Anfang der 90er Jahre, erschien River Phoenix vielen als die große Schauspielhoffnung. Und in der Tat, mit Streifen wie Explorers, Stand by me, Mosquito Coast, Little Nikita, oder aber seiner bewegenden Verkörperung des Danny Pope in "Die Flucht ins Ungewisse (Orig.Running on Empty)" bewies der 1970 geborene River sein schauspielerisches können in beeindruckender Weise. Spätestens seit seiner Rolle als junger Indiana Jones, im 1989 abgedrehten "Der letzte Kreuzzug", standen dem jungen Schauspieler alle Türen und Tore Hollywoods offen.Mit "Das Ende der Unschuld" (Orig. My private Idaho,1991) übernahm River Phoenix auch mutigere Rollen, fernab des Mainstream Kinos. Dafür wurde ihm 1991 der "Coppa Volpi" bei den Filmfestspielen von Venedig verliehen.In dem 1993 unter der Regie von George Sluizer begonnenen und erst 2012 vollendeten "Dark Blood" ,sehen wir River Phoenix in seiner letzten Rolle. Der Schauspieler verstarb kurz vor Ende der offiziellen Dreharbeiten 1993 an den Folgen einer Überdosis Heroin und Kokain.An der Seite von Judy Davis und Jonathan Pryce spielt er hier den exentrischen Einsiedler "Boy" , dessen Frau an den Folgen radioaktiver Tests in der Mojave-Wüste verstorben ist. Boy lebt hier zurückgezogen mit seinem Hund und glaubt an die mystischen Fähigkeiten seiner von ihm geschnitzten indianischen "Kachina Puppen"Als der nur noch mäßig erfolgreiche Schauspieler Harry mit seiner Frau Buffy eine Autopanne hat, kommt ihnen Boy zur Hilfe. Der junge Boy verliebt sich in die extrovertierte Buffy, sehr zum Unmut von Harry. Die Situation spitzt sich zu und eine Katastrophe bahnt sich an....George Sluizer war es wichtig, sein Werk vor seinem eigenen ableben (2014) zu Ende zu bringen. Die fehlenden Szenen aus dem Drehbuch, ergänzte er meist gekonnt mit Standbildern und mit eigenen Monologen aus dem Off heraus. Teilweise mutet einem dieser erzählerische Stil jedoch etwas merkwürdig an. Zu erwähnen ist hier zum Beispiel die Szene, in der sich Buffy an einer Glasscherbe den Fuß verletzt. Diese Off-Szene wirkt (notgedrungen) sehr konstruiert und man fragt sich, warum George Sluizer diese nicht einfach beiseite gelassen hat. Dieser Gedanke drängt sich einem umso mehr auf, da sie für das herantreiben der Handlung nicht wirklich existenziell von Nöten gewesen wäre.Unbedingt erwähnenswert sind auch die brilliant aufgenommenen Einstellungen der Mojave Wüste. Was der Regisseur hier auf Film gebannt hat, würde jedem Landschaftsfilm zur Ehre gereichen.Auch die Qualiät der der hier vorliegenden DVD ist über alles erhaben. Auf geeignetem Equipment (in meinem Fall Panasonic TX 58EXX789) haben wir hier gefühlt fast Blu-Ray Niveau.Der Film liegt leider nur im englischen Original mit deutschen Untertitel vor. Es bleibt zu hoffen, daß irgendwann noch einmal eine lokalisierte Version erscheint. Verdient hätte es dieser Streifen allemal.Fazit: Unbedingt empfehlenswert !!

River Phoenix letzter unvollendeter Film der wie The Crow fertiggestellt wurde.Teilweise erschreckend den Hauptdarsteller so zu sehen. Allerdings auch hypnotisch, faszinierend bis betörend dem Filmverlauf zu folgen. Es kommt nicht oft vor das ich einen Film unterbreche um durchzuatmen, sozusagen.Aber ich bin froh ihn nach all den Jahren doch noch angesehen zu haben.Es gibt heutzutage viel zu viele Filme die vielleicht ähnlich sind, aber so eindrucksvoll und nachhallend ist keiner davon.Mehr als nur empfehlenswert!

To be able to view this unfinished film: feels like a small miracle when you research the background. God bless the soul of George Sluizer for having the vision and fortitude to get this film out. River gives a haunting and powerful performance as " Boy". The Director has done a commendable job in putting the pieces together to make the story fluid. It leaves a raw, bittersweet feeling for what this film could have been and what the world lost that Dark Halloween morning when River said goodbye forever.
