five stars but a few caveats....
First, the good: (We are going to use this pump to power the water flow in an off-the-grid swimming pool we are building.)I set up the pump for a test yesterday, to make sure it was working before the return period expires. This pump rocks! Nice soft start up, and then it really puts out. Filled up a 5 gallon Home Depot bucket in under two seconds. It's quiet, too. There are a couple of things not in the description that are worth mentioning: inside the controller there is a rotary dial, which lets you control the exact output of the pump. The pump comes with a very nice base for Mounting. The controller box is metal, the door has a gasket seal, and overall is very heavy duty. The company is very responsive when you contact them, so they are closely monitoring the Amazon site… At least for now. Now, the caveats: the whole thing came in a cardboard box with various plastic parts, like the inlet and outlet to connect to PVC, just randomly thrown in. Packing is definitely not their strong point, but maybe I got one that somebody else had opened. I was worried that perhaps something had been damaged in transit, but, like I said, everything works great.Apparently this company makes several kinds of pumps, including cylindrical submersible pumps. Even though there is a picture of this pump on the cover of the manual, the manual, the instructions are actually written towards installing a submersible pump, not an above ground pool pump. You just have to read through the submersible part, and figure out which parts of the instructions apply to his pump. The company makes several different of these pumps, with different horsepower and voltage ratings. Be aware of that, if you want to attach a separate battery bank and have the controller charger charge it, you can only go up to the 48 V pump. The controller that came with my 72 V pump does not accept a battery input… The connections are just not there.

JP21-19/900
I have an old in-ground pool with about 23,000 gallons and with 1-1/2" PVC and copper plumbing.I just completed a power and flow rate test on top of my pool deck before I go to the trouble of connecting the pump inline with the existing system and I thought I'd share my experience.Tools/equipment:Things I would buy first: DC volt meter, DC amp meter, flow rate meter for swimming pool, solar panel wye wire connectors, solar panel wire extension cablesThe owner's manual leaves a bit to be desired as the diagrams refer to a 1000w pump and mine is a 900w pump. I watched several YouTube videos as well as talking to a few pool supply stores but was not able to get any definitive answers to my questions. I even went to my local building department. Everyone said the same thing "I never heard of a solar pool pump". With a little common sense and some luck I think I got it right.Flow rate meter:Moving along...I first purchased a 'Blue-White' 1-1/2" pipe water flow rate meter and installed into my existing filter system first and recorded the existing water flow. My existing 1hp 240v pump provides 45-50 gallons per/min which is supposedly about the maximum pressure for 1-1/2" pipe.Solar panels:There is a formula in the manual recommending 1.3-1.6 times the watt rating of the pump of total solar panels to provide. My 900watt system calculates to 1170 minimum to 1440 watts maximum of combined solar panel output. I bought some used panels rated at 36v, 8amps and 285watts each and connected 3 of them in a series configuration at first and got only 35-40 gallons per/min of flow. The next day I added a 4th panel and reconfigured the wiring connections to a series/parallel configuration that totals 1140 watts, less than the suggested 1170 minimum. (note that 4 panels in series adds up to more than the maximum input voltage the controller can handle) The 4 panel system provides about 72v and 15-16 amps of power and it has max'd out the flow meter at 70 gals per/minute. Wow. I ordered a new DC amp meter to verify the amperage input. You need to be careful here as the controller box lists 150v maximum and 16 amps maximum input. I was told that you should not exceed the maximum input voltage. This pump is so amazingly powerful and with free solar power I am very happy. On an October day the pump starts at about 8am and runs until 5pm...that's a lot of filtering with free energy. So that's been my experience so far with solar panels and water flow rates. I may return and update the rating to 5 stars after installation.

Works perfect for my 15,000gl pool
I never thought it would work this well. It is extremely efficient. It starts running as soon as the sun hits the panels and then speeds up as the sun rises. The flow in the pool is excellent. It was easy to install. The couplings to the pump were a bit stiff, but with some silicone grease it worked out fine and the connection was tight straight away. I should have had this pump long time ago. My pool is a lot cleaner as well because the pump runs so long. Highly recommended to every pool owner.
