Boxing's Ten Commandments: Essential Training for the Sweet Science

An excellent book on boxing for those who are serious about learning this combative sport.
I have been into numerous martial art and combative sports (Karate-Do, Judo, Jujitsu, Boxing, Kickboxing, Wrestling and Tai Chi) for more than 60 years. I am always searching for more books on the above topics. I recently purchased this fantastic 224 page soft cover book (Boxing’s Ten Commandments: essential training for the sweet science by Alan Lachica with Doug Werner) on Amazon for a bargain price. This very interesting and informative book covers the sport of boxing in greater detail than most other boxing texts. This book is filled with photographs (900 photos) as it explains the ten essential boxing lessons that must be mastered to become a good boxer. The lessons taught includes the following: The importance of stance and rhythm, footwork, mastering range, the laws of punching, the jab, punch mechanics for fundamental punches, defense and counters, angles, putting it all together and making a plan. This text emphasizes the importance of sparring and mastering offensive and defensive skills. Blocking and counter-punching is also covered and various training methods are also explored. This book is aimed at those who are serious about actually learning the sport of boxing. As I have often emphasized when reviewing any martial art or combatives book, the best combination is to use this book along with actual hands-on training with a boxing instructor. The only complaint I have is that many of the photographs are very small; however, it does not take away from the value of this book.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Tactical Principles of the most effective combative systems).

very basic
I wrote a harsher review of this book but removed it for this one; still, many of the reviews and ratings mystify me. I mean if you don't know anything about how to step and drag, how to throw basic punch combinations, or how to give angles, then this book is for you. If you ever boxed--I mean like Boy's Club level--then you could have written this book. My six year old son already knew most of what is covered in this manual. The author teaches the basics well, I guess. I whole heartedly disagree with his opinons on slipping vs. blocking and which gives better position from which to punch. It goes against everything I have ever learned in any gym I ever worked out in the world. Blocking ties up the hands, slipping frees the hands, period. Of course you mix it up and use it all. Yet he does speak of the power Tyson generated off of slips, so... The photos are very clear.

Good book: but does not claim to replace good coach
This book expands on Fighting Fit by same author. I like both books a lot. But neither can replace a good coach or trainer and neither book claims to. A good coach is not judged by his words about himself or even here say "verify" the knowledge and safety practices of trainer before trusting them with this job. These books give some insight on choosing a trainer as well. If you are just wanting to learn about the sport and using it as a workout system these books will be good.

Very Good Source
There's a ton of information here. The section on the defences to the various punches is worth the cost of the book alone. You can tell that the authros spent a lot of time working on this book and that they are very passionate about boxing. If the photos were clearer I'd of given the book five stars. It's definitely worth the money and you'll find yourself referring to this book again and again.

Essential reading for any boxing beginner!!
This book contains all the essentials of the 'Sweet Science' and it presented in a format that is easily understandable. It is a great book to read before you even 'think' about starting to learn how to box. This book will help you learn how to hold a correct stance while boxing; and learn how to box the correct way. Which is very safely! Protective gear is a must. As well as a proper diet. I enjoy boxing for strictly a workout and this book is a great way to begin that workout!A++A tremendous thank you to Alan Lachica!

Best book on boxing I have read. Even better than Haislets classic!
I have read every book on boxing I could find over the last forty years and this covers material the others don't mention or barely touch on. The section on fighting using angles should be in every boxing manual. You can tell the author has been a diligent student of boxing and really knows his material and covers techniques and tactics others either never mention or barely touch on. Any student of boxing or mma should have this book. The best on boxing I have read in forty years!

Great for beginners
I am new to boxing so it was great for showing styles and boxing moves as well as you can in a book. Obviously going to a boxing gym is much better but this at least explains it very well like the difference between southpaw and orthodox. A great read. On to kickboxing now ;)

Best for Beginners
This is precisely what it says on the tin: a good guide for the basic rules and techniques of boxing. As a former university boxer who stills does twelve rounds at the gym, I am often interrupted by those who want to learn about proper boxing and not just limit themselves to boxercise. This is the book for you. It is also a good refresher for those who have been out of the ring for a while, like myself, and who want to revitalize the old instincts. It is easy to follow and is good on all of the techniques and especially on the punch combinations. The illustrations are good and well chosen. In short, an excellent book and I hope that it becomes more widely known among those who want to learn how to box. If so, I may get to punch away without interruption.

Superb essential boxing skills
Alan Lachia and Doug Werner have put together an excellent instruction book of the fundamentals and more advanced aspects of boxing. Plenty of photo's and text breakdown in detail how to out box and out think your opponent, they even have 5 variations on the jab.Their book, Boxer's start-up, is also excellent but this will definitively give you the edge. Brilliant!

I liked it a lot
I liked it a lot, it's not revolutionary by any means. However, you get what you pay for. It gives good pointers and explains the ten commandments well. It explains why they are usefull to have and the consequences of neglecting certain aspects of the sweet science.

Very good
The strategies and skills in this book were laid out perfectly into ten basic rules. This way it is possible for the advanced boxer to choose which skill he would like to develop and go straight to it rather than messing about through the book searching. Any boxer could up their game with the advice in thsi book.
