Wonderful artist, very disappointing book- basically just copying overly simplified paintings.
The artist deserves 5 stars, but the book deserves only 2. I had high hopes because this book seemed to unite my love of Frida Kahlo, Dia de los Muertos, vibrant colors and folk art. The artist delivers on the style but the book breaks down on substance. I hate posting negative reviews of an artist's work, and the only reasons I do are- 1) to prevent others from feeling cheated by too many positive reviews, and 2) most importantly, to help the author with any future books.Heather Galler has a great style- very appealing colors and bold lines and patterns. What I'd hoped for from the book was instructions on how to paint in a folk art style, how to see things and draw in that style. I would have loved to see the images that inspired her and how she interpreted them. How did she create the patterned backgrounds and the stylized faces? There are only a few pages at the front of the book that discuss paints, other materials, techniques, styles and interpretation. I mean like 8 total, and that includes several full page paintings and lots of white space. There is only 1 photo of a Chihuahua in a hat and serape next to a painting of the dog, and 3 sentences that basically say I picked this Chihuahua because I like Chihuahuas. You could have fit all 8 pages easily on 2. The remainder of the book is 16 chapters of completed individual paintings with line drawings and instructions to just copy the drawing and then copy the colors. The instructions say things like "With a light purple paint pen, draw random sized polka dots on the purple background" right above a picture of that stage of the painting with purple dots. There are no references to why paint colors were chosen or how you can vary the background, absolutely no room for individual interpretation. This is pretty much a coloring book that you have to transfer to canvas. Several of the reviews mention something like this, but not that every single painting/chapter is like that. I really can't emphasize enough the allover skimpiness of information. The gallery at the back had some very cool paintings (especially the image of Einstein) but with no info on them at all.Overall, this book is a huge disappointment. I'm keeping it because I like her work, but if you see the sample chapter of Frida Kahlo, that's pretty much all there is to the rest of the book- 16 simplified images painted exactly the same way. There's no progression of techniques, just the same instructions over and over again.

Love this book!
This is a great inspirational art book for beginners. I just finished the painting that is on the front cover and had so much fun doing it. There are a few projects that are very basic, e.g. the landscapes and some that have more detail. You may be disappointed if you are already an experienced painter; as I mentioned it is more for people who are just starting out.

Fascinating inside look
As the owner of many original paintings by Heather Galler, this book is a fascinating look into the making of her art. It makes a wonderful coffee table book and conversation piece. It would be a great gift for anyone who appreciates "folk art" or who is a budding artist. The selections of paintings include portraits (such as Frida Kahlo as shown on the cover), animals, cities and landscapes.

Very disappointed in the book overall
This book basically gives you templates to trace to reproduce the artist's version of the folk art painting. No info on folk art itself or how to really learn to paint in a folk style. Very disappointed in the book overall.

GREAT TECHNIQUES
I just love Heather Galler's artwork and have ordered quite a few pieces. This book is just awesome and helps you learn how to create folk art yourself.

For beginners who want to learn how to color in with acrylics
This book shows Galler's fun, colorful acrylic and Sharpie paintings, but proceeds to tell you exactly how to replicate them down to which color goes in which space. Disappointing if you are looking for an exploration of folk art design. You can, of course, study her work and learn from it, but you can do that without this book.

Great book; Galler is a real talent!
I've been a Galler fan for several years and this book is wonderful. I would recommend for anyone who enjoys mixed media work and/or folk art.

For children
It’s for children to try and imitate folk art, not very explicit

Fun, Colourful Projects for a Painting Beginner
This book was very much what I was expecting - a great way to get used to using colour and brushes. The step-by-step instructions take you easily through to the end so you'll soon have the satisfaction of having completed a painting. The paintings can be done in a simple painting by numbers style, however, I started to adapt them in places to make them a bit more challenging. I copied the small templates onto A3 paper to test my drawing and scaling skills. I also used small brushes, rather than the painting pens suggested - for the outlines and tried out more traditional one-stroke painting details on the flowers and other shapes to practice my brush skills - although this didn't necessarily result in a better picture! As well as the actual projects there are lots of examples of Heather Galler's vibrant paintings to enjoy.

Check if your local library has it first, because it’s not worth the money.
This is a tiny little book with a step-by -step guide on how to copy Heather Gallers work. Each step takes a whole page.I really liked some of Heather Gallers artwork. In fact I am cross stitching one of her designs at the moment. Sadly, this book has made me realise that she doesn’t take much time and effort with her artwork. It’s just splodge it on the canvas without much thought and someone will buy it at a stupid price. The same pretty much applies to the book.

Very Informative
Wonderful little book. Great ideas and clear instructions. I even learned some background about the images. I want to use some of the ideas to paint on rocks.

Bueno pero No hay paso a paso para el dibujo
Me gusta. Hay lindos diseños para pintar. Pero no hay paso a paso para el diseño, solo para aplicación de tinta , o sea, tienes que ser bueno en dibujos!!! Pero me gusta
