Product Description A vivid, dynamic Southern coming-of-age drama, THE WISE KIDS takes place in the transitional space between high school and college, when life seems to be all questions and no answers, and the future is scarily wide open. Set in and around a Charleston, SC Baptist church, weaving through this ensemble piece are three main characters - Brea, an introspective pastor's daughter experiencing debilitating doubt, the hyperactive Laura, Brea's best friend and a devout believer, and Tim, the open-hearted son of a single father, confronting his homosexuality for the first time. Review A tenderhearted gem. To call THE WISE KIDS a Christian movie or a gay movie, or even a gay Christian movie, would be to force a label on this touching, low-key drama with no axes to grind. Unfailingly kind to its characters, THE WISE KIDS is devoid of the evangelical versus secular rhetoric of today s culture wars that seeps into most movies addressing religion. Good, but not what you would expect.
One would assume this movie would write itself - gay boy, southern religious community, the plot seem infinitely predictable. But that is not this story. This is a new take on an old theme. Oddly, in a manner of speaking, the gay kid is the only one who actually has his act together. It is everyone else that is falling apart.Though we do see standard themes, the are presented with a twist. The lead actor is very good (Tyler Ross) and he was also very good in " Nate & Margaret ", another movie well worth watching. I think he has great potential as an actor, and the movie is worth seeing just to see him work.Low budget, limited production values, but an engaging story with engaging characters, well worth a look for anyone who enjoys independent film. Also, within the first few minutes of the movie, the title "The Wise Kids" makes perfect sense; very clever.

Talented and Adorable Cast
Moving portrayal about adolescent conflicts with religion/tradition and sexuality, faith, and friendship. However acting as times over played and some secondary plots detract from the main story.

Excellent film that honestly deals with issues dear to my heart
This story is too personal for me and many Christian gay men. Growing up I was always told that my attraction to men was sinful and would lead me to hell. This story, however, changes the dynamic. There is no outward homophobia and attacking of gay teens here. This is more a story about faith and why we even believe and how powerful love is when one is true to one's self. All of the characters are made to deal with a world that is not only black and white and dogmatic. Even the religious one in this trio of best friends has to challenge the fact that, due to her way of living her religious devotion, she can appear to be stupid and non-thinking. Assumptions are blown apart in this film and folks are forced to deal with real issues that they would rather not deal with. In the end, the truth shall set you free becomes a powerful force.

Inner Conflict
The testing of the friendship between three friends from an evangelical Christian community. One is questioning the beliefs she has been taught; another is wrestling with his homosexuality; the third cannot accept her friends' doubts and orientation. A story of growing up and becoming comfortable with yourself.

No bad guys here
No bad guys here. No bad decisions. Just people growing up--even the adults. Subtle, intelligent performances. A wonderfully written script.Beautiful directed and photographed. A moving, perceptive film about three teens you might live next door to, who are undergoing crises of faith but come out the better for it. No drugs, sex or teen rebellion here--just a gradual understanding of possibilities and the adventure that life can offer a steady heart and an open mind. Wholeheartedly recommended.

What I enjoyed most was in the Bonus/Extra section
I have to say that Stephene Cone's commentary piece in the bonus/extra section, "Religion and Sexuality in the Wise Kids", is one of the most intelligent, articulate, and succinct 11 minutes on film that I have experienced in a long time. Here is a writer/director that is insightful to his work and purposeful in his writing. I have always thought that art preceeds society and Mr Cone sees the currents in our culture. Looking forward to his next project.
