A Blues For Buddha

This is as strong or a bit better then their Letters from St Paul debut
I missed this when it first came out but that doesn't make it any less of an album. This is as strong or a bit better then their Letters from St Paul debut.

Great album by one of Scotlands finest bands
I can't tell you have many nights I sat listening to this on headphones, or how many roadtrips I took with this album as the soundtrack. Glasgow's THE SILENCERS made a masterpiece recording on this album - surpassing their more famous "Letter From St. Paul" debut album, and only second to their 1993 "Seconds Of Pleasure" album. This album is a smooth recording with a late 80s reverb coated production - big drums, nice chiming guitars, beautiful harmonies and great songs. The thing I respect most about this band (esp on this album) is that they don't come off as just another Scottish band trying to sound like American rockers. They SOUND SCOTTISH, and sound like they are proud of it rather than trying to be like the US. Only a few Scottish bands wear their musical upbringing on their sleeves so honestly - Big Country comes to mind.Jimme O'Neal has one of the most unique voices in rock, and one of the quirkiest lyrical styles - all combined with a fine pop sensibility. There is some beautifully poetic lyrics, some bouncy joyful music ("Real McCoy") as well as darker thought provoking studies of our world ("Blues For Buddha"). Fantastic stuff, and not a bad song to be had anywhere.

Wonderful Music
I first heard of the Silencers on NPR in the late 1980's and quickly purchased the 3 albums that were then available; Letter to St Paul, Blues for Buddha, and Dance to the Holy Man. To this day these discs have a treasured place in my collection. They have no "bad" tracks or filler material, it is all solid musical goodness. I do not understand why they did not become a huge success here, but do yourself a favor and pick up any or all of these that you can get your hands on.

A masterpiece
"A Blues for Buddha" is almost 20 years old as I write this, and its power, spirit, and relevance have dimmed not one bit. I loved it when it came out, and it is no less magnificent now. This is a very special CD.

extraordinary!
Like its predecessor, A Letter From St Paul, another phenominal exhibition by this band. I bought this album in 1989 and still listen to it this day. I also owned St Paul and Dance to the Holy Man--they disappeared from my collection long ago, but to my dismay I cannot find them anywhere any longer. It's regrettable they are/were not bigger. The world should be their oyster.

Really interesting album
I thought this was the ska band but I was quite pleasantly surprised by the music found on it it is like a sort of 80's rock, pop, slightly celtic style music with a large cheese chunk of sort of U2 esque style. There is a some good simple bass lines and interesting drum beats. What is really creative is the guitar work which doesn't rely on just chords it plays broken chords and chimes almost like an after thought in places with a bit of keyboard instrumentation backing it up this give the music a very strong rhythmical quality where most of the melody comes from the strong vocals that have nice subdued relaxing air to them. Really good stuff. Also it isn't plaqued by horrible 80's gated snares either the drums are a natural real sound too which puts it higher up in my book too

The Silencers
Only recently discovered this group when this album was suggested to me on youtube. This group are kind of inbetween James and Simple Minds. Love these sort of albums where you go into a deep-thinking, feel-good trance. Not a duffer track on it. All good.

Capolavoro dimenticato
