Durable, light, and no-fail functionality
These pedals have lasted through tons of hard mountain biking. I used them for fast riding, technical riding, and for tens of thousands of feet in climbing on the trails. I have never done any maintenance on them and they have never failed.

Great for the Road!
Outstanding pedal for Road and MTB.This review is primarily for anyone like me who is on the fence as to whether or not to purchase these for your road bike, here is my experience. I've been cycling for 20 years off and on and recently found a sweet deal on a Specialized Roubaix so I decided to get back in the Roady game.I looked at the Shimano 600a single sided SPD and read every review on the XTR Race and 9020 caged version. I purchased the 9020 thinking the extra caged area would increase my shoe contact but that was not the case, it's just extra protection. Purchased the Ultegra SPD-SL and was surprised at how much I didn't like them! They are phenomenal pedals but having used Time ATAC's on my MTB the last several years I didn't realize how spoiled I'd become to dual sided clip in and being able to walk around normally in my cleats. So after one long ride on SPD-SL's, and a hole in one of my deck planks from the large cleats, I ordered the XTR Race. After clipping in the first time I knew I'd made the right decision. Tension is outstanding (mine are set on 6 for all 4), fast to clip in, easy egress, etc. I was surprised at how challenging the Ultegra SPD-SL's were to clip in. Even after 30 minutes of clipping in and out, testing the tension and cleat placement etc. I was still having issues engaging the cleat (though I'm sure this would have decreased with use). After an hour ride yesterday on the XTR's, there were no hotspots in my Northwave Carbons, though I could tell there was a smaller surface area under my feet it did not affect my performance.I would love to see Shimano enhance their SPD line with a cleat providing a little less float, but for now I've found my pedal! Plus there is the side benefit that all the bikes at my Gym have SPD's pedals! All Shimano products are outstanding as is their quality control, but the low weight, ease of use, shoe functionality, and performance of this pedal gave it a blue ribbon for this guy's road bike!

Great Road Bike Pedals Too!
I just purchased my second pair of these for a new road bike I bought. I know they are considered a mountain bike pedal but they work great on road bikes too. I originally put Shimano Ultegra PD-6800 SPD-SL pedals on my new carbon road bike but found the shoes rather difficult to walk around in. I'm an urban biker and I dismount and walk a lot so they just didn't work out that well. I have these pedals on my other bikes and they work great with the SPD shoes. I will keep the SPD-SL pedals and put them back on for long road trips but if you ride then walk and then shop or whatever, I find these a superior solution

MUCH MORE VALUE THAN EXPECTED
Been riding the cheap Nashbar and Shimano Deore generic design since 1992. These make a real difference and I fell a bit of float but not as much as Speedplay road pedals. I didn't go for Crank Brothers pedals since they need service often, have bearings fail often, and are known for breaking easily on the rocks. I ride in southern Arizona and crush rocks often. These surpass my expectations and they should last.

Great MTB Pedals!!
Great MTB Pedals!Very happy with this purchase...ultralight pedals with excellent performance... Despite searching for pedals with a some platform for when I decided to ride bike without cycling shoes, I went back and tried to remember when I did that the last time and couldn't remember, so just decided to go for these pro pedals and focus on my riding experiences...go for them!

I've been running the XT version of this pedal for years without issue. Recently, I decided to upgrade to the XTR. There really doesn't seem to be any difference... except this pedal lasted less than 30 days! The seals in both left and right pedals blew out and all the grease started coming out. I don't ride downhill or enduro or anything that is hard on pedals... only cross-country in Texas so it isn't the terrain. Very disappointed! I am guessing I probably just got a lemon.

These pedals kick @ss. I can't believe I put up with those dang Eggbeaters all of these years in the interest of 4 sided entry and a few grams of weight. Totally not worth it. Loving the solid platform and I'm counting on the legendary Shimano reliability... It had gotten to the point with my Eggbeaters that I had to re-grease the axles every couple of months.
