Q: I have thick but short curly hair... would this straightener be good for it?

I too have thick and curly hair that's cut short. This flat iron works fine for me. If your hair is too short this won't work. Personally, I like it.

Q: it's listed that it has 20 heat settings, can you be specific as to what those heat settings do?

There are "20" heat settings on the dial, but it's more like 4 and a couple of dots; i.e. 1, dot, 5, dot, 10, dot 20. So to say there are 20 separate heat settings is misleading. This iron gets HOT. I can't remember the exact temp, but basically if you're not sealing in a salon keratin treatment you shouldn't be using it. It's over 400 degrees and will fry your hair off. I keep mine on the dot between 5 and 10 (I have fine hair) and will not set it any higher than that. So, depending on your hair type . . setting 1 does nothing. Setting 10 straightens well. Setting 20 will break off all of your hair :-)
