Beachcruising and Coastal Camping

This book is wonderful. If you like sailing and camping, get it!
A few years ago I started thinking about getting into sailing so I got a couple books to see what style I'd be into. This book was one of them and Ida and Michael's adventures really resonated with me. So much that I bought a beach cruising sailboat and I've been on dozens of adventures already! So, the book literally changed my life by introducing me to a whole different way of enjoying boating and the water. These pages are loaded with practical information plus adventure stories. I find myself referring back to it quite often. Even if you don't end up becoming a beach cruising sailor, it's a fun read. I think it could be useful for people into outdoor adventure stuff, not just sailors.

Fantastic book! If you are a fan of icons such as Richard Proenneke and Bill Mason then this book is a must have addition to your collection! If you are not yet a fan I suggest you look them up, buy this book and become a fan. I find that many of the perspectives and methods taught in this book not only apply to beach cruising but are very well suited for other modes of adventure as well. From over landing in vehicles to canoeing the great rivers of the north, if these are the sorts of things that interest you then this book has a lot to offer. Simplicity, GO SMALL, GO LIGHT, GO NOW! I mean it! Forget about the 44' Hans Christian pilot house cutter, get one of the boats they recommend and GO NOW! Thank you Ida and Michael!

very good book
You dont need expensive complicated yachts to go on the water and have fun, be safe and explore. This book shows you how to do it. For those on a budget, wanting to explore the area near where they live, (or elsewhere) this book is packed with really good advice. Well written, its a fraction dated but thats OK, its the ideas that come through, heaps of sense, shoal draught boats that you bring up on a sandbar and wait for the tide to go out are cheaper, simpler and more fun. There should be more boats like this, and less of those expensive deep draught boats that sit at the marina for 50 weeks a year

just super low draft
An engaging book, if a bit out-of-date in terms of layout style and such. It is really focused on the authors' own boat choices--ultra shallow draft mostly homebuilt micro cruisers. Not little centerboarders, just super low draft, and canoes. Also completely focused on their experience cruising Florida and the islands. I enjoyed reading it, but it didn't really have much to offer me as someone who sails a 19' centerboarder in New England, even though I *am* coastal cruising and beach camping.

Entertaining and Informative
I first saw a recommendation for this book on a sailing web site. I then came across the book here while searching for books related to sailing small boats and coastal cruising. This book is full of practical advice, entertaining anecdotes and the kind of real world knowledge that can only come from experience. I found their advice on the process of choosing the proper boat and how their own requirements evolved over time to be particularly educational. The unique perspective of this book focuses as much on life on a remote shore as the process of getting there and returning. It contains helpful advice for the entire journey. If you enjoy sailing, camping or a good story, I expect you will enjoy this book.

This is about the best book you could every hope to read on the subject. Even with all of my training in the U.S. Army, I still acquired a lot of new and useful knowledge by acquiring this book. The knowledge acquired from this book will make all present & future fishing/camping trips just that much more enjoyable. The author will take her time to answer any and all questions you may have. She is a real professional act.

An excellent source of information
You've heard the expression "they wrote the book on,,"? Well, it's true in this case, Ida and Michael have written a definitive book on beach cruising and camping backed by their personal experience. Although published in 1992, this book is still very current. The information has not become obsolete. I highly recommend it.

If you are planning on beach cruising in the United States, this is the book for you. It is loaded with how-to tips as where to go information. The narrative is spiced with first person experiences also. The back end of the book actually evaluates many of the viable boat models which would make capable beach cruisers. Well worth the read.
