Can I give it 12 stars?
After listening to Peloton, The Great Eastern, Hate and Universal Audio, I'm tempted to nominate The Delgados the best pop band since The Beatles broke up. Yes, they're that good. The 2 lead vocalists are superb songwriters in their own right. They each play their instruments(guitars) well. Their lyrics are some of the most meaningful and deep I've ever heard in recorded song. However for me, as a classical music afficionado, I love The Delgagods guitar orchestration, use of classical instruments, chorales and shifting time-signatures. This is complex, heady stuff. In particular, THe Light Before We Land is so grandiose, yet lyrically deep that it literally touches the musical heavans. Woke From Dreaming does the same its own subtler way. The Drowining Years has to be the darkest song with a melody ever recorded. Listening to the lyrics at times makes me weep when I'm in the mood.Take this lyric from The Drowing years:Life isn't precious and life isn't sacredSometimes release only comes when you meet deathI can understand why they didn't make it commercially(the masses are ignorant of what consitutes good music), but this is true greatness.

Also check out "Gunslinger Girl" too..
Now I get the tie-in, why the makers of the Anime series "Gunslinger Girl" used The Light Before We Land as its theme song. Just like the Anime, this album is dark but impossible to resist. These songs are simply amazing, grand sweeping orchestra-esque movements contained within a rock framework. Plus, any band that composes in 3/4 or 6/8 time gets my attention. Check this one out.

This is not a scathing review. (Surprisingly)
After listening to their music for a year after I discovered them (thanks gunslinger girl), I finally bought the enhanced, extra track album which includes "Coalman" and "Mad Drums" and I have no regrets. The music is amazing but I suggest listening to all the tracks before buying it so you, too, may have have no regrets.

Love and Hate
John Peel promoted The Delgardos heavily, and with reason - they live up to the "unique" label. You can hear the influences, from Jeff Lynne (they did a killer cover of Mr Blue Sky) to the dourest moments of The Smiths, but they sound unlike any band I know recording today. It's hard to say why, but these mightily depressing tunes are great fun.

Indie Rock
This album has songs that are sung my a woman & man seperately. Their music is very diffiferent and I really only listen to the woman's songs- they have lyrics with raw emotion along with beautiful music.
