Works as advertised, if not a bit ugly
My old original toilet seat had finally come to a point where it needed replacing. After shopping the big box stores I decided I wanted a self closing toilet seat. The lift-off hing feature seemed nice, so we decided to go with the Mayfair 48E2. Overall I can say we are happy. Rather hard to be disappointed with a toilet seat.Pros-Installs easily - I like the self torquing feature of the installation bolts (they break off at a certain torque/tension and supposedly do note require future adjustments - time will tell)Self closing - self closes slowly but does eventually close.Lift off capable - seat has a quick release feature that allows the seat to be removed for easy cleaning around the hinges.Made in America (USA)Cons-A bit ugly - The seat looks fine, but I must admit the white plastic hinges look a bit ugly. I much prefer the chrome/brushed nickel hinges on my other toilet seats. The hinges for some reason remind me of a toilet seat from a hospital.Lift off capable - I haven't had a need to take the seat off, but I did try to take the seat off to test the functionality of the lift-off hinge function and could not get it to work easily. I actually have yet to remove the seat in fear of breaking the hinges. So your mileage may vary.Overall a nice seat, with good features and a good price. And to top it off Made in the USA.

Installation was a snap, uninstalling the old one NOT. Here's what I did...
I've not even sat on this seat yet but felt the installation deserved 5 stars alone. ***Update, I have sat on it :)*** The old seat was a *(#))#!! to remove! It had integrated bolts with nylon nuts under the bowl. I'll explain how I took off the seat since it will probably save someone some hassle.I first tried using a socket but the metal threads were corroded and the nylon nuts just spun. Then I messed around with a needle nose pliers followed by a drill based on an online recommendation. Phooey. Not enough space and the nut was way too messed up.Here's how to get the old seat off with the nylon nuts. Use a torch to heat the bolt from underneath. I only allowed the tip of the flame to contact the bolt since the porcelain could crack with heating too quickly. The nylon will get very soft and allows the seat to be lifted one side at a time. Only about 30 seconds of heating is needed to get the threads to slip through the nut. Make sure it's soft enough so you don't have to pull too hard, potentially cracking the toilet. I would place a sheet of aluminum foil under the bolt to catch the hot nylon nut once the seat bolt lifts through. Also the nylon nut can catch fire and you'll get a flaming gooey ball of nut coming off the bolt when you lift up. My nut fell onto some linoleum and could have left a permanent mark had I not smacked it back onto the toilet quickly. I would put out the flame before lifting the seat since you don't need to deal with fixing a floor after putting the seat on.My pain is your gain. It is worth the hassle with the torch since it could be removed in a few minutes instead of laying on the urine stained floor for a half hour, wrenching a messed up nylon nut. Take the opportunity to get a real torch ignition head with a trigger ignition if you don't already have one...Back to this seat. The instruction say to use a 1/2" crescent or socket and the nuts are very long and accept the 1/2" tool at virtually and point. After dealing with the old seat fastener for 30 minutes, this went on in about 1.5 minutes.

Sexy, But First Relationship Lasted Only 4 Months...
I bought this Mayfair Lid via Amazon in July'2011 to replace my prior seat (Lid1) that had been around for 6+ years. I'm the type of guy that was going to ride my old Lid1 'til she exploded but the Wife finally laid down the ultimatum that Lid1 had "worn out her welcome". What I liked about this Mayfair 48E2 were a couple things she could do that our old Lid couldn't: Quiet Close feature (no more slamming noises when the kids use it) and the Quick Release (my Wife is a clean freak, see previous comment above). So Mayfair arrived and I found the install very easy even though I am not that handy of a guy - just put the two bolts on the toilet, popped her on, and our family was "good to go". New Lid2 quickly fit into the family and we all liked her - smooth comfort, quiet close, easy pop off for occasional cleaning (after family taco nights, in-law visits, etc). But then one cool brisk day (November'2011) we popped Lid2 off for cleaning and she accidentally dropped and cracked in half. So we got about 4 months out of Lid2. The pop-off/pop-on feature may be a blessing and a curse - I think if Lid2 had stayed put she might have lasted a lot longer. Also Lid2 appears to be made of wood/ particle board which may sound fancy but I think doesn't survive a drop as well. I gave it some thought and Lid3 was purchased November'2011 and I went with the same Mayfair. The main factor for my repeat buy was Laziness - the bolts were already mounted on my toilet so I was just able to pop Lid3 into her new home with little effort on my part. We'll try to be more careful not to drop Lid3 but if she does break I will have to cut my losses and go with something different (maybe one of those sexy Japanese models with the auto sprayer / blow dryer / cologne spritzer). So, I give this Mayfair 3-stars. I like her features and if she'd lasted five years I'd give 5-stars, I'm willing to give one more chance but have to dock a few stars thus far. If Lid3 makes it to five years (and I am still alive, and I still remember) then I will come back and update this review.

A bit of an extra expense, but you'll probably be using a toilet seat for a very long time!
I upgraded some old toilet seats in a rental after folk were complaining that the wooden seats were beginning to split and 'bite' them - after some googling around I saw that these were recommended as Wirecutters toilet seat, so I figured I would give them a shot. I am quite impressed so far - they are super easy to install, super comfortable, and super easy to clean. I haven't really made use of the 'snap on and off' feature yet, but at the end of the day its a super nice and sturdy toilet seat. The only thing that caught me off guard is how incredibly slow their 'slow close' hinge works. I suppose I expected less it would slowly descend the entire way, more maybe a drawer-esque thing where it would swing down, catch, and lower slowly. Not something I will fault it for though!

Wont last more than a few years
Ive had this for about 3 years, and then the lid started to lose its tightness, would close it and it would almost hit the seat. can't say this will last a lifetime, maybe a few years at best with 1-2 people using it regularly

Quick Release Mechanism will FAIL
So we purchased two of these, since loved the quick release system for cleaning. However within 3 months, the quick release system started to fail and would always pop OFF when the lid was closing. No amount of adjusting could resolve the issue, the release mechanism would no longer lock down the lid. I suspect if everyone in the family is under 150 lbs, these would stand up however we have two of these, and the exact same failure mechanism on both. We knew the cleaning aspect was to good to be true - lesson learned.
