Very Current Good Balance of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality
In reporting and instructing in a topic such as Virtual Reality and Augmented reality where the ground state of technology changes daily it is almost impossible for a publication in book form to remain current. Mr. Mealey performs an admirable job in reporting on the latest hardware for AR and VR, including all price ranges of Head Mounted DIsplays and Haptic Inputs. He also covers well the health and comfort concerns of AR & VR users, as well as the steps and cautions for an individual or company to enter this arena. While he describes the basic tools and API's used in developing content for these technologies the coverage of software tools in a little more ssketchy than the description of hardware and equipment. This handbook definitely belongs in the library of one considering a purchase in this arena or entering the market.

A basic introduction to virtual and augmented reality
You won’t become an expert in virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR) by reading this book. You will, however, gain a better understanding of VR and AR than most people have. \ Author Paul Mealy takes it7 step by step by first defining VR and AR, exploring the current state of each in terms of available devices and then going on to essentially describing available VR and AR devices. A person with an avid interest has probably gleaned all this information already from their own reading. The next ninety pages are given over to a discussion of creating content. Again, someone with great interest in this subject will have gained the insights offered here from their own open-source of reading. Onward to the assessment of the future of VR and AR. Again, all of the material has Appeared elsewhere before. Illustrations are sparse and generally generic. In short, this is an overview of a complex technology. For the part, this book covers the surface and has little technical depth. Good if you just want an introduction with all the basics between two covers.Jerry

Nice Introduction
this is a nice introduction to VR and AR. It really seems designed for people with limited technical knowledge. the organization and writing and decent. It provides a nice overview of both systems. If you are looking for a technological guide you will not find it here. The information is basic but still valuable to those seeking to get a preliminary understanding of the systems and their potentials.

What has happened to Dummies guides? They used to be well-written with great graphics, a joy to read. This book uses cheap paper like newsprint that results in grey-scale photos. There are no good graphics. The writing is wordy and slow, doesn't get to the point quickly, and doesn't have interesting content. It's a waste of money.I recently purchased a gaming computer and want to acquire a VR headset to use with it. I'm not interested in games, but would like to try other VR contexts such as educational and historical VR videos; movies; creation within VR; and whatever else is out there. But I was happy to have an overview of the whole VR world, including the creation of VR apps and so on.So far I can't find anything of interest. It's boring and useless and not even visually appealing.

Super

A place to start.
Another Dummies book. Follows the usual pattern of these books and if you are new to all this stuff, a worthwhile introduction. On the other hand, if you have some knowledge then it won't surprise you that the book is inevitably slightly out of date already. These are fast moving fields and it would be tricky for anyone to keep up, especially with print deadline.I do wish in some ways that the two subjects had been the subject of two seperate books. While VR and AR have a lot in common and can overlap in delivery, they are two completely different things really. AR is about adding media to existing scenes - for example furniture to a room or a game like Pokemon Go. VR can be a wrap around image, a 3D game that puts you in the middle of the action, VR is an artificial world that should be/could be immersive, the tech is different to AR and is best experienced with a headset.Read it if you want to find out a little about what you can do. However, if you want to create AR or VR you'll have to go elsewhere.
