Great for research
I'm looking for information concerning my ancestor Joseph Desmet Lewis 1805-1899 He was an interpreter and guide for father DeSmet. I didn't find any information here it was well worth the time to read this book.

Need a good title for your next paper or thesis. This guy is it.
Take a minute and look this man up. See how many thousand of miles he traveled in the American West in the 1800's, hundreds of thousands. Look how many times he sailed back to Europe even meeting with Pope. Unbelievable man and story but bet you have never heard about him. Makes all western heros and super man types look like the one of the three stooges.

Historical biography of a saintly priest
This biography of a saintly Catholic missionary who worked with American Indians in 19th century was written in 1915 by another priest. Many historical photos reproduced in the book. Very valuable book.

Interesting, historical, & inspiring!
Bought this for my husband & he is enjoying it very much. He will read bits and pieces to me from time to time. This is a history of missionaries that we were not familiar with. What Father De Smet went through to spread the gospel is very inspiring. Will read it as soon as my husband is done.

A man for all generations.
A book that one cannot put down. Our government sure did a great job at annihilating the Indians off the face of the earth all for the sake of greed.Father De Smet's life is the most awesome account of a true missionary that I have ever read.

He would have converted all of the US if the gov't didn't stop him
Outstanding book on the life of the great Fr De Smet, which history books rarely mention at all. Reads like a movie. Sad what the gov't did to the Indians though the gov't disliked all things Catholic so shouldn't be too shocking

A fascinating read.
The Life of Father Dr Smet is a fascinating account of this Jesuit priest`s incredible work bringing the Catholic faith to thousands of North American Indians. The book describes the many hazardous journeys amounting to over two hundred thousand miles and the many trials and deprivations. Father De Smet experienced in the service of God. The reader is amazed at the energy and determination that this simple priest exhibits in bringing Christ to the Plains Indians. The book also gives a clear picture of how the Indians could be corrupted and taken advantage of by white men and the American government. This book is a highly recommended read.

Great book for clarification and insight on the life of Priests and the Natives that they ministered to!
This book is so great and I received it very quickly. If you want to know about a great Priest who evangelized the natives, read this book. The book also has insights to what the natives were like and how they responded to Catholicism. This helps to clear up the notion that some people think the Natives were treated horribly and that their culture was stamped out. Catholicism takes only the good and elevates it as is shown by the life and fortitude of Fr. De Smet!
