This is one of the most awesome craft books ever
This is one of the most awesome craft books ever. I bought it because the flowers appear on a jigsaw puzzle by Cobble Hill. As I assembled the puzzle I wanted to make the flowers more and more. So I bought the book and at this point I have made more than 2/3 of the flowers/vegetables in the book, plus I have even upgraded my iPhone OS so I could join a community of crocheters on Instagram. It has literally taken over my life. I will add one caveat - there are mistakes here and there in the written directions. But the graphic diagrams are flawless. In particular the raspberries in the last set of directions have to be worked as 10 dcs starting at the top of the post of the 2nd dc below and back up to the top of the post of the 1st dc below, not starting from the 1st dc below and going on to the 2nd dc. That was hard to figure out, but it was obvious that things weren't working out properly when I did it as it was written in the book. To figure that out, I had to look very hard at the photograph. This book is just fantastic for someone with a few extra brain cells to catch the mistakes and some experience with complex crochet patterns. I would give it 6 out of 5 if I could even with the errors.

I love it!
Margaret Hubert is a creative crochet genius in bringing the granny square to flowering life in her book ‘Granny Square Flowers’. In addition to the flowers of each month for the year, she has included squares of companion flowers as well as beautiful wildflowers, flowers to celebrate the seasons, and gorgeous squares of fruit slices. Each square ranges from easy to advanced in level of experience, but all appear approachable with practice, as her directions are precise.Where Hubert’s true creativity is best illustrated is in her projects at the end of the book. Granny squares are truly updated and trendy in the blankets, shawls, toys, jumpers, hats and scarf she presents. This book belongs in every crocheter’s library who enjoys the beauty of flowers incorporated in the crochet world. I highly recommend this book!

This is my summer obsession!
I have admired the Margaret Hubert crochet books over the years, but this summer the 3-D flowers in this book have captured me. I am currently working on the twelve "flowers of the months," so I have some quibbles and some tips. The positive: The book format is excellent, with both instructions and crochet diagrams. The spiral binding keeps the book open while working. The tables on the back review abbreviations and crochet symbols as used in the book. The photos show strong detail and the color schemes make following the designs easier, although some of the green leaves/green background could have been rethought. The instructions are clear and give step-by-step directions on how to achieve the look of the finished project. The 15 projects show how the granny squares can be incorporated into a variety of clothing and household goods. A brief tutorial on granny squares and binding is given. The quibbles: The information on hook size and gauge (H/8 (5mm) hook and 6-inch finished squares) is buried in the instructions in the back for the Birthday Flower Lapghan. The introduction mentions that the yarn weight is consistent between the patterns, but the finished sizes may be different. This is frustrating if patterns are mixed into the same project. The problems: There are mistakes in the project directions, such as referring to previous dc stitches as hdc (Carnation) or referring to three yarn colors when the project photo and later instructions clearly show four (Water Lily). These little glitches can be bothersome, particularly with a complex multidimensional pattern. The tips: There are only three "easy" patterns out of 50, so be prepared for a challenge! I am drawing on my past experience to work through projects. For instance, Marigold switches between two colors for the petals, so I did my normal "insert hook, drop one color and yo with the other, pull through and ss" instead of using the pattern instructions. The flowers have several leaf patterns, and some add no leaves. I try to match the leaves found in nature (Water Lily/lily pad, Marigold/narrow leaf). The backgrounds are varied and use a lacy granny square design. I am using a consistent foundation loop (6 to 12 chain spaces), then 36 dc circle row, then 44 dc row with (dc, tr, dc) corners every 10th dc.I am adding alternative directions as I go to my book. This has been a very enjoyable process, and I look forward to tinkering with more of Ms. Hubert's designs.

Good reference book especially for Crocheted Flower Lovers
This is a great book on granny squares featuring flowers. Margaret Hubert gives good directions even for beginners. Granny squares are usually one of the first things new crocheters learn to do and this book gives many options so a person can change the look of the finished piece depending on the flower square chosen. Good reference book in my library.

Great resource book!
I enjoy making Granny square afghans as a wonderful take along project, as I find making the squares relaxing. One can make an afghan of just one flower, or a few different flowers, mixing in with plain granny squares, depending on the crocheter's need/wish or color scheme. If someone only looks at a narrow viewpoint, of seeing the granny squares of flowers and veggies as ONLY granny squares, they are missing the point. These flowers can be made without the square to decorate anything from sweaters, hats, scarves, even to decorate a wrapped gift. A creative needlworker is or adaptable crocheter can find more ways of using these designs. I love that the book opens flat so its easy to photocopy the page 'my' current square is on, and carry only the photo copy, preserving my book. This book inspired me to order "The complete photo guide to Crochet" by the same author, and I am quite happy with both books.

Good but could be better
Liked the flowers. Book is good but the instruction for making squares weren't always accurate. Perhaps I am not experienced enough to understand the directions properly.

The only 'problem' with this book is that all the squares are so pretty, I don't know which one to start on first!!!!
