Great story, Recommend reading, but slight quandary
In bit of a quandary on this one. I actually really like the story alot. Jonathan Brooks incorporates science fiction, fantasy, modern day earth, and aliens in a really interesting story line that manages to technologically/scientifically reason through the "magic" and "fantasy" of a dungeon setting. In this context, it is a very creative take on the genre providing for its own depth of story, characters, and world. In most, to-date, that I've read in the dungeon heart/core genre, you find almost a whimsical relationship built between the core and its friendly connected companion. Jonathan Brooks breaks from this line of thought, and creates an antagonistic relationship that in its own way builds comradery. Interestingly enough, if you look at any of the relationships in the book, from within the prologue, main character, or side characters, all of the relationships seem to be built from or have antagonistic elements to them. It is an interesting approach, and overall, I again applaud the creative approach and differentiating characteristic.Where I'm left scratching my head is the element used to create the antagonistic relationship with the main character and companion. It almost comes across that the author is trying to antagonize his readership, or at least some of it, but that would be quite the bizarre thing to do, so don't believe that is the intention. I'm a bit tone deaf to rough language these days in the genre (and similar genres) as it has gotten so rampant, but to throw it in so heavily in the dialogue, calling it out as the antagonizing relationship element is just odd. I believe it was the author's desire to be a strong element of humor while creating this dichotomy in the relationship, but it was way overdone to the point of being distracting - not even a corny humorous element, greatly lacking in creativity (which Brooks demonstrates he has in spades), and making the dialogue quite disjointed in some areas. I'm sure quite a few readers will find that element quite funny. I personally thought it was a distraction from an original and very creative story that cheapened the overall work substantially. It isn't the use of it that got to me. Its that it was overused to try to be the creative element of antagonism between the characters versus used as an emphasis to highlight a creative antagonistic relationship. If the goal was to antagonize some of the readership and create some sort of dialogue, then "win" I guess (don't think that is the case at all though).Overall good story, recommend read, and look forward to future works in the series.

Terrible character development and swearing
I don't mind a basic amount of swearing in a book but when a MAIN character swears and insults people every other word it shows the inability of a writer to express a character well. I saw similar comments from other reviewers but gave this book a try because it said in the synopsis that this had been rectified. It was not! The character development was unbelievable with one main character having almost a split personality and having no personal care for her own life as she swears, insults, and does nothing to help save her own existence. If your looking for a dungeon core book, look somewhere else this is a sad attempt at literature.

Vulgar, Vulgar, everywhere, Nor any plot to think.
I love Sci-fi. I love the game franchise of Dungeon Keeper. This story should have been right up my alley.NO.A well placed swearword or dozen can be a good thing.Something to humanize a fictional character.Instead, I find a deluge of pointless vulgarity and a mono-molecular sheath of plot to try to justify it.I struggled to finish Chapter 9 due to this, and 34 words into chapter 10 I gave up.I wish the Author well, but seriously regret purchasing the follow-up at the same time.

Just not for me
The books premise of an human turned into a machine to control an passive aliens defenses. Ok I can buy that. But as you read further instead of letting him have the rudimentary defenses and attack knowledge/abilities , he is made to level up to get that, really? Especially as your civilization is being annihilated, makes no sense at all. Then when you have the nanites to be able to fix his core or repair his equipment and you take that away too..it's like sending a soldier to fight, then just before he leaves take his gun away, remove his med kit, and turn tie his hands behind his back.

Give this one a hard pass.
Everyone seems to be hung up on the abrassively crude personality of the A.I. in this story. While that is one of the major reasons that I detested this sorry sack of excrement that they tried to pass off as a story, it is by far not the main reason. My main isue with this story is the total lack of logic and some pretty glaring contradictions made by the author.First off, the damage to his core plating, he shouldn't have to refine so much new material to repair it. he only needs to recycle the damaged plating. It's always easier to recycle refined metal than it is to refine new metal.Second, the rediculous explanation they give on how to refine the new metal is pure game mechanics, the problem is that this is not a game it's supposed to be reality and therefore is complete and total BS.Third, and I don't know if anyone else caught this, the A.I. tells him that it took them 4,512 years to travel from Earth to Collective space, and then in the same chapter tells him that the ship they were on had a device that allowed them to make that same trip in just a few minutes? Either the A.I. was lying to him or the author is a complete and total moron. The dynamic between the female A.I. and the main character is beyond antagonistic. The A.I. is rude , condescending, vulgar, and brow beats the week-willed main character constantly. It's like they took every negative characteristic a woman could possibly have and rolled it all into one.

Dismal, crude and unintelligent
Oh dear, there's so much better than this out there in the genre and I had to waste money on this: How the reviews were written I do not know, but it is hard to see how they raved about this. My trust in Amazon review is sinking fast. The plot is riddled with holes, short cuts and improbabilities, the narrative thin and jumpy, descriptions poor, Characters stereotyped and 2 dimensional, the dialogue crude, childish and jerky. What is good.... well, I'd like to think I could find something... but I can't.I tried to finish the book so the review could be based on a full read but 1/2 way through I realised it was both excrutiatingly painful and that every precious moment wasted here was just one more I'd never get back. And to add insult to injury, for what it is, it is ridiculously overpriced: Must be aiming on making his cash quick before genuinely representative reviews come online!

A great read
I really loved this book it doesn't really have a typical dungeon core story line but it does develop well and provides a fresh take on this type of story and is very enjoyable read. I can't wait for the next one.

A different approach but well done!
I like the way he has approached this. Not the usual computer game “dimension”. A bit more sci-fi than most but still traditional. Well done. Looking forward to more!

Definitely amusing
I'm not a gamer more sci-fi traditional but give me more. Can't wait for the followup. A good mix of both genres.
