Easy to understand..clear and concise examples

This book is great! I went to Musicians Institute and actually took the funk class with the author of this book. You would get a lecture hear him play with the band (travis carlton on bass) and then we would all line up and perform what we just learned with the band and get feedback from Ross. It was great. I have since then gotten rusty and in no time this book has helped me get back in shape. For those who haven't it's still great! No joke you'll be funky in no time with this. Spend about 20 minutes a day on it and also go back and review things you've done already from time to time. With this book and some of the recommended listening you are in good shape to start getting some groove work out there. Playing in funk bands ect. Or say you just want to tighten up you're rhythm playing. It will do that great too! The cd is pretty nice and help to hear things you might not know from just reading the book.

Funk Guitar is a great introduction to learning how to play a specific version of funk on the guitar, but it is a far cry from being "The Essential Guide," which is how author Ross Bolton bills his book. It does contains a lot of very useful information. There is a great explanation of timing and strum patterns, which is great, and there are a lot of different voicing of key chords, such of dominant 7ths and 9ths. However, this book should really be called, "The Ultimate Guitar to Rhythm Funk Guitar." 95% of this book deals with chugging along with chord progressions. There is a chapter on scales and single note melodies, but it is really short. This book is short enough where there should be more on this. In fact, the reason why I got this was to learn funky guitar lines, which is not really present.I recommend this book for people who want a quick lesson on rhythm funk guitar. This book won't have you popping like John Frusciante or getting down like the great funk groups from the 1970s, but it's not all bad, if bought at the right price.

If you've never played Funk guitar, you will when you're done with this book! I have to disagree when anyone that says this book is not for beginners. The chords and rhythm grooves on the CD are exactly what beginners need to stay interested in chords, chord progressions and structure. It will also please the ears of parents and other nearby listeners. There is more to the fretboard than shredding you know. Once you start getting the basics of this book underway, I strongly suggest listening to some James Brown, Tower of Power, Funkadelic (the sixties stuff), Rick James, Prince (the beginnings) and The Meters (Cissy Strut).There is some very good stuff in this book!

Good book for beginners. Funk is all about rhythm, and once you get that message you only need to read the book a few times then you're ready to move on.

This is a fantastic book. As titled, it covers the 'essentials' of funk guitar - the absolute foundations necessary for playing this style of guitar. It's all about timing and the 'groove' and Bolton gives excellent and concise examples. Don't rush through, take your time and master each lesson and you will get more than your money's worth out of this book.

Der Name des Buches beschreibt hier schon eindeutig den Inhalt: die wesentlichen Hinweise....Hier bekommt am als Funk-Anfänger verschiedene Rhythmen erklärt, die als Basic für Funk Musik zählen. Nicht mehr aber auch nicht weniger. Wie schon geschrieben wurde ist das Buch sehr dünn, deshabl kann nicht sehr vertieft auf die verschiedenen Funk-Arten eingegangen werden. Hierfür gibt es weiterführende Lehrbücher. Wer sich aber mal ein paar dieser Rhytmen a neignen möchte, der kann dieses Buch getrost nehmen. Die Soundbeispiele ermöglichen es, die einzelen unterschioedlichen Rhytmen besser zu begreifen und zu üben.Jeder Rhytmus wird in Tabulaturschreibweise dargestellt und auch die üblichen Akkorddiagramme sind zu sehen.Zusammenfassend: wer mal erste Eindrücke und Erfahrungen mit Funk sammeln möchte, dem sei dieses Buch empfohlen. Man sollte allerdings schon etwas Rhythmuserfahrung haben, sonst wird es schnell frustrierend.

Diese 32 Seiten plus 76 Demo-Tracks auf CD liefern Funk-Rhythmen.Jeder Rhythmus enthält 1-3 Akkorde. Es handelt sich um Akkorde, die als Griffbild-Grafik dargestellt sind und auch von Anfängern leicht gegriffen werden können. Barre'-Griffe sind nicht nötig. Die Akkorde sind aber so wie hier dargestellt verschiebbar und damit auch in anderen Tonarten zu nutzen. Einzige Schwierigkeit sind die rhythmischen Schlagmuster. Aber da ist man nicht auf das Heft angewiesen. Denn die kann man sich ja auf der CD anhören.Also: anfängerfreundliche Darstellung.Und vor Allem: Es funkt. Geht richtig ab. Was will man mehr?

This is a great Funk Rhythm primer. It's basically about rhythm and chords, but it does a very good job with it. And so many guitarists start with notes and lines that their rhythm work is weak. If this is you then it's a great book. But if it's single line work you want I would suggest something in the Blues You Can Use series. I think those are great packages. Nevertheless, this is a substantial practice tool and you can learn a lot and really progress with something like this. If you're an absolute beginner this might be a bit much for you, but if you can play some chords and songs in time, and want to move ahead with your playing, there's a lot inside.
