3 Primatology mother's in 1book
Really cool book about the 3 matriarchs of primatology, Birute Galdikas- orangutans, Dian Fossey- silverback and other gorillas, and Jane Goodall- chimps. All 3 went into the jungle to live with apes. All female. Cool ladies.

My Bucket List
My bucket list for travels has always included a "sit down" with the gorillas in Rwanda, Uganda, Congo or wherever I could manage. An invitation to go to Indonesia to see and be with the orphaned orangutans presented itself not long ago. And, Jane Goodall is a personal hero. This book is a natural for someone who cares about our natural world, endangered species, and those who give their lives to be a part of the efforts to study and save these various species. I have shared the book with others in an effort to promote these causes. It is doubtful that I will get to these areas of the world--verdict is still out on that. Living vicariously may be the way for me. This book has allowed that. And the three women who are the focal points in WALKING WITH THE GREAT APES have been and are amazing. The other book I recommend if gorillas are of interest to the readers of this review: Michael Crichton's TRAVELS. His account of gorilla interaction was extremely funny--how making his 6'6" frame seem small and unthreatening was quite memorable and brings a smile every time it is recalled by this reviewer, (not to mention his effort to climb Kilimanjaro in tennis shoes).

Attention: Primate Fans
A wonderful book for anyone interested in wildlife and especially in primates. The author does a great job of detailing the lives and primate studies of Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Birute Galdikas and all the challenges they faced studying these great apes. I am very grateful that this book was brought back into print.

a window on our closest cousins and ourselves
Sy Montgomery did a good job of showing how similar chimps, gorillas and orangutans are to humans. Each of Leaky's "primates", Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey and Birute Galdikas were transformed by their relationships with these great apes. What they learned changed our understanding of what it means to be human. They also raise questions about what is possible to learn of these animal through unstructured observation and gaining their trust rather than by rote data collecting.

I do love it! First of all
I do love it! First of all, it has female protagonist in a male dominated area. Secondly, it's written by a female author as well. The book provides a different look at what it takes (and how much it takes) for a woman to become on of the world renowned researchers in the area of great apes, how the science and approaches to research have changes as we gained more knowledge about these apes, and how these women not only talk the talk, but also walk the walk.
