Locks into a solid shaft with a firm flip of the wrist or downward thrust of the forearm. Also will extend and lock if you swing in a firm and fast roundhouse attack. Smaller individuals should use a two handed grip like golf club. Don't know how strong it is, but it certainly has the weight and the materials and finish are better than I expected.
