Sharkey The Bounty Hunter
N**Y
Heavy-metal Euro-trash
“Sharkey the Bounty-Hunter” is a six-issue series not only featuring Euro-style science-fiction artwork – and the cartoony/caricaturist style too, not the realist style that would probably have made it feel worse than it already does, but also featuring a style of story that can best be described as American (and British, come to that) kids-comic science fiction from the 50s and 60s – when ‘science’ was not considered important enough to get in the way of a story.I have to allow that much current Euro-album science fiction, especially from French-speaking countries, tends to have the same disregard for the real, too. Are we the only country with a BBC?Anyway, this is a sort of heavy-metal space fantasy – Sharkey bears an uncanny resemblance to Lemmy – with an American cowboy bounty hunter out to make a big score, with all the Hollywood trappings (What’s that you say, Netflix have bought Millarworld?) – ex-wife, orphaned kid, ex-special ops operatives with higher moral principles than the people/beings they hunt, misunderstood peoples’ revolutionary terrorist who’s been framed by the crooked politicians, and a Trump reference just in case you didn’t get it.I don’t like the cartoony artwork, I don’t like the facial hair on the main character, and I don’t like the complete disregard for how Outer Space actually works, despite the fact that I read comic-books about people who can fly and pick-up buildings an giant ships without their hands going straight through. The story does have a logical structure and plot though.Go figure.
