It's Always the Husband: A Novel

Wow...a book about Dartmouth!
Awesome, totally gripping thriller and ethics tale. Not only because of the page-turning storyline, but because this book about Dartmouth (I graduated from Harvard myself like the author, but grew up in Hanover, NH, where both of my parents were Dartmouth professors. Throughout my adolescent years, I spent time with carbon copies of all the characters in Ms. Campbell's novel: the rich bitches, the snooty but sex-crazed frat boys, the druggies and the suicidal basket cases. The book is about Dartmouth, under the pseudonym of a fictional, New Hampshire Ivy League called Carlisle). It's a true-to-life tale of Dartmouth College, and I laughed, cried and said "go figure" all the way through it's 400 pages. It also reminded me of the many reasons this particular Hanover "townie" elected to attend college elsewhere. Ms. Campbell explores without restraint the real unhappiness and sickness that hides inside many pretty, shiny, fast-talking sorority girls. Young women setting out to start college would do well to read this book, disturbing as some parts may be. The harsh, realistic picture the story paints could very well save these young women from making a deal with the devil...one that is hard if not impossible to back out of.A must-read, hard-hitting and un-put-downable.

2.5 stars
Rating and reviewing this book is difficult for me. It's like a twofer. Two books for the price of one.The first half of the book is very character driven. It covers 2o years worth of history between three women, who first met their freshman year at an Ivy League college in New England. The story is well done, the writing is good, and the characters are interesting...but it's quite slow. Not slow to the point I wanted to put it down, but slow. It alternates perspectives and time periods, but is quite easy to follow. The second half of the book is entirely different. It's as if you're on a roller coaster and the first half of the book is the slow ascent up that initial huge hill...while the second half is that huge plunge back down, and all the twists and turns that follow. The final 50% of the book doesn't stop. It's one revelation after another (although few of them are surprising). And the ending...well, it was tied up a little too quickly and easily for my liking. After all that build up, the ending seemed anti-climatic (and again, not at all surprising).Overall, I'm going to call this an average read--it's not great, but it's not horrible either.2.5 stars rounded to 3.

DAMAGED FRIENDSHIPS, SECRETS, & LIES...
Kate, Aubrey, and Jenny first met as college roommates and soon became inseparable, despite being as different as three women can be. Kate was beautiful, wild, wealthy, and damaged. Aubrey, on financial aid, came from a broken home, and wanted more than anything to distance herself from her past. And Jenny was a striver—brilliant, ambitious, and determined to succeed. As an unlikely friendship formed, the three of them swore they would always be there for each other. But twenty years later, one of them is standing at the edge of a bridge, and someone is urging her to jump. How did it come to this? Kate married the gorgeous party boy, Aubrey married up, and Jenny married the boy next door. But how can these three women love and hate each other? Can feelings this strong lead to murder? When one of them dies under mysterious circumstances, will everyone assume, as is often the case, that it’s always the husband? My Thoughts: In a story that begins with one of the women standing on the edge of a cliff, It's Always the Husband: A Novel takes us back and forth in time, from when the girls were roommates at Carlisle, in the Whipple House dorm. They became known as the Whipple Triplets, and oftentimes the moniker denoted their adventures, misdeeds, and dark habits.Something happens one dark night: a death, lies, and a parting of the ways. The New Hampshire small-town setting kept me engaged, as did the consequences of that one night. At first I liked Aubrey, feeling sorry for her plight and her attempts to measure up. Jenny was annoying, in that she often did whatever was necessary to be Kate’s best friend, with Kate’s father egging her on. But even she tried to do the right thing, only to be quashed in her attempt.Kate was so damaged that I couldn’t imagine a scenario that would redeem her.Twenty years later, I found nothing likable about any of them. The mystery would finally be revealed, and I kept guessing about who pushed one of them off the bridge as I read about the women in the present. There were plenty of suspects, and we watched behind-the-scenes machinations, only to be stunned in the end. Definitely a book that kept me reading, even as I lost interest in the characters before the final page. 4 stars.

El libro maneja un ambiente de suspenso y misterio por lo cual me parece muy llamativo, ademas de que nos muestra una historia muy bien estructurada.
