Power Man and Iron Fist Epic Collection: Doombringer

Punchy in Every Sense
It's nice to see a third PM&IF Epic Collection materialize; by my count that means we just need one more to have collected the entire series. Happily, after a somewhat lacklustre second volume, this one seems to be firing on rather more cylinders, thanks to new writer Kurt Busiek and artists Denys Cowan and Ernie Chan. They manage to keep a humorous but still reasonably grounded tone to the book, as the two Heroes for Hire take on mostly street-level threats rather than world-conquering perils. They succeed, too, in making the Times Square of the early eighties, in all its run-down glory, just as much a character as the protagonist pair and their well-fleshed-out supporting cast.Luke and Danny have nicely different 'voices' throughout, even if both their powersets essentially come down to basic variations on punching. Luckily, their villains, ranging from Chemistro to the Doombringer of the title, have a slightly wider array of powers that keep the battles from blurring together.Extras include a Marvel Age article about Archie Goodwin's brief return to the title (for the Doombringer storyline), two very famous Bill Sienkiewicz house ads, and original art by Chan, Greg LaRocque and John Byrne. It's a book that will always be one of the lesser lights of the Marvel pantheon, but this volume shows that it still had plenty of interest to offer.

What a fun romp!
Quite possibly the greatest buddy comics of all time. It's such a time capsule to both genres, blacksloitation and kung-fu mania. It's a "soundtrack" to my life.

Good book poor condition
Bought new but came damaged and huge creases on covers. But pretty good old school read to continue on with the heroes for hire.
