Off to Class: Incredible and Unusual Schools Around the World

I must confess, I haven't read the book. I bought it thinking it would be a wonderful collection of photographic essays, or at least photographic evidence that would describe the powerful journeys of children attending school around the world. What I found was an elementary-level book filled with cluttered small-sized low-resolution photographs that do nothing to illustrate the point and simply trivialize it by showing up to half a dozen pictures on two front-facing pages. As soon as I opened I noticed the clearer and bigger picture appears on the cover. To make matters worse, every page is filled with extensive descriptions of the locales and the analysis of some local events or what-not... I honestly don't know for I couldn't stand to read it. It was a story I anticipated being told beautifully through images, but what I got was a reference-grade book that simply aims at pretending to cover the issue as to check it off a list of things to learn about the world, instead of allowing the reader to visit and live through the power of the printed image and word.

My students have loved reading this book. The real pictures and description is perfect for teaching kids about other kids around the world. My students have a difficult time relating to and understanding the lives of others and this is a great teaching tool for that!
