Q: Can it be used as an outdoor toy?

I don't see why you couldn't...but why would you? its meant for table top, and if your child spills any sand out you can easily scoop it back into the box :)

Q: How big are the fairies and are they plastic? I'd like to find some extras to go with it. Thanks!

They are plastic and the fairies are about 2 1/2 inches tall from toes to top of wings.

Q: Is the sandbox wooden or not? Also, how many fairies come with it?

The box is plastic not wooden (thought it was wooden at first) and holds the sand well but it is good to have the plastic mat (that comes with it) underneath for mild natural cracks in the plastic (at corners not totally sealed by glue). There are 2 fairies and the other items shown in the advertisement. My daughter loves it and it is cute and easy to put away. We use a scoop/cone for putting sand in ziplock bag until use again (helps for clean up). It comes with a light green sand but you can add sand from Hobby Lobby or Michael's for different colors. Hope this helps answer your question.
