Thor By Jason Aaron: The Complete Collection Vol. 1

The Coming Age of Thors
One hel of a way to kick off a new series. Jason gives the Marvel Universe a new iconic villain. Gor the God Butcher. His story is told in a disjointed time traveling way. Thor is repeatedly ambushed by Gor in multiple timelines. It takes the combined strength of all of him selves to defeat him. The second half of this volume deals with the Dark Elf King. Man I wish whoever wrote Thor 2 the movie had used this as a blue print. Great story with a wicked ending. Not going to spoil anything for you. Just know there's epic battles, drunken fights and even a little romance. Enjoy

Marvelous
The story of the butcher of gods is the best story ever told. The art of Esad Ribic is unparalleled in all respects. Although the stories and the artworks of the rest of the book are nothing but mediocre, I just cannot be stopped from giving it a 5-star rating.

A good blend of mythical flair and modern storytelling
Thor is an easy character to get wrong. There are a few ways to do him right, but this collection took a difficult path and wrote him like the good of legend while still keeping the Marvel flavor.

I Count Myself a Thor-Foe No Longer
I have never been a fan of Thor as told by Marvel. I am a huge fan of real-life myth and folklore, and had trouble getting on board with making Thor a super-hero, especially with the weird and unnecessary changes to the original myths, such as making Loki Thor's brother rather than his uncle.I am a fan of Jason Aaron. I loved Scalped and Southern Bastards, and as I am also a fan of super-hero stories, I decided to see if Aaron could make lemonade out of Norse lemons. I was not disappointed. This story is just really good. There is a mix of well-written characters with a blend of serious storytelling and a dash of the humor from the good Thor movies. The premise is really interesting and thought-provoking, exploring themes of the nature of divinity, the relationship of gods to their worshipers, and the responsibility of an all-powerful being to those that worship them. The villain is excellently conceived, complex, with a motivation that makes him not just another two-dimensional bad guy sneering and twirling his mustache. I found myself identifying with him at times, and recoiling from his sadism at others. The art is really good, although I found the visual design of the main villain 5o be pretty derpy-looking. He's like a cross between the twi'leks from Star Wars - the aliens with the vestigial tentacles sprouting from their heads - and Voldemort from the Potter movies. Such a goofy look for such a menacing foe.I am very much looking forward to the rest of Aaron's Thor run, as well as his other work for Marvel Comics.

One of the best Thor stories.
There are essentially two stories in this collection. In my opinion, the first story is one of the best Thor stories ever. A great villain to really challenge Thor and make the God of Thunder fearful. The second story was still great, but compared to the first story, not as much. The art was amazing throughout. It fits well with a Thor book.

First half is great
The God butcher storyline and art is great. The villain is compelling and the scale epic. The second story arc is a big drop in quality though and feels more rushed in terms of story and art. I know some marvel comics have an 18 issues per year schedule as Ron Harvey's art is usually stronger. I also wonder if the author initially only had the God butcher arc in mind and was asked to do more but didn't have anything fleshed out. It may be things pick up as the author settles into a longer run. The second arc just felt like poor Lord off the rings tribute or wheel of time.

Not a good story flow, dissapointing
I thought this would be very good, but the story line jumps all over the place and I mean every couple of pages, no consistent flow, so this ruins any sort of story, the artwork is ok, but feel very much let down. If you like a jumbled time traveling story then you might like it, but I find time travel ones just ruin things.

Lived up to the hype
My god, this book is so good. The writing and artwork is perfect and the God Butcher is a character to give kids nightmares.
