A review of Apte's Sanskrit-English dictionary
A dictionary very well prepared and can be of great value to the student of Sanskrit. It follows the format of a well known English dictionary. I take great pleasure in recommending it to students who wish to develop an executive mastery of Sanskrit. I also recommend its companion volume viz. English-Sanskrit dictionary to those students whose first language is English.

Excellent value for money
I took a chance in purchasing this book 'used', as I would have saved $20. I don't regret that decision, because there's no way of telling this book is used. It's in mint condition. Many congratulations to the seller for this quality and price. Would recommend this seller for any book!

Good but it says "vedic terms are omitted"
I just bought this dictionary today. It's only 15 dollars, but is a big red book with large pages and three columns and has lots of examples of word combinations.I was studying Chinese, actually, but it looked so nice and inexpensive too, that I found myself at the register buying it. Next, I thought I'd search for the Upanishads, etc., in Sanskrit so I can start reading through them and drawing fun boxes around the words I find in this wonderful dictionary. So then I sit at my desk at work and open up the first page, and in the Preface on page iiv it says "With this object in view I have not thought it necessary to include Vedic words of Vedic senses of words..."And then I flipped through and saw lots of words like names of quail species and bark-garments and on page 629 a word that means "breaking wind downwards" whatever that means..., but proportionately less for philosophy.I wanted to see words that mean enlightenment and fifteen ways to say nirvana...But I haven't used it yet, these are just my first impressions. But it's inexpensive, big yet handy, so I'd go ahead and buy one. And that's why I give it a "4." Thanks, Bruno

adequate but ...
The standard Sanskrit Dictionary for Sanskrit students is the Monier-William dictionary ... However, packing it around takes the entire back pack. For early years of study, the Apte dictionary is an adequate volume to pack around. However, you'll still need a Monier-William at home.

In depth BUT....
This is a very clear and in depth dictionary except I feel let down by one thing. There is no randomised version of the Sanskrit words and no suggestion as to the pronunciation of the word entry. I don't know Sanskrit well enough yet to read it so at the moment the dictionary is quite useless. Can anyone recommend a Sanskrit dictionary with supported randomised wording?

THE STUDENTS SANSKRIT ENGLISH DICTIONARY.
The book is good and to my expectations. The printing is very clear and visible for reading. But CARE should have been taken while bringing these books to stand. The bottom of the page 199/200 is torn completely.

brilliantly executed
The dictionary is very well made and is very informative, font is very readable . Overall the dictionary is must for a beginner or a intermediate student. If you want to read Vedic text, you may want to get some book else.
